My wife and I each just got the new 4S from Verizon. I've noticed (or I think I have), that I don't ALWAYS get alerts. I believe this occurs if I'm in an ongoing conversation with another party.

This makes sense to me. If I'm texting back and forth with my wife, there really isn't a need to be "notified".

Can someone confirm that this is the way SMS/iMessage works on IOS 5.0.1?

    Thanks

If you are texting someone and a text comes in from them, you will NOT get the standard alert sound. There will be a soft notification sound to let you know there's been a reply while you were typing. If you are just waiting for a reply in a conversation, there should be the regular notification sound.

If your phone is locked (screen is off) and you receive an iMessage/SMS, you will get the standard notification sound. If you are currently inside the Messages app when you receive a SMS/iMessage you will hear a "swoosh" like sound. It has always been like this.

If the person who's conversation you are currently viewing sends you a message it vibrates and/or makes a quieter and different noise than your current tone.
