SMS and Phone Caling Relay Query

Hi All,

Must the iPhone and the iPad be connected to the same wireless network for it work or do you simply need to ensure WiFi and Bluetooth are turned on?

Same Wifi, same AppleID as I understand it.

Any data connection. My iPad is on Wi-Fi iPhone on 3G. Works perfectly. No Bluetooth, all done through the icloud account.

Any data connection as said above. I never have my phone on WiFi, and all my devices get my SMS and iMessages. Not sure about the phone calls though.

I thought it might be like that as it always seems to fail if my iPhone and iPad are not on a wireless network. Thank you for the responses. It also doesn't seem to work if the iPad is tethered to the iPhone.

If phone is tethered basically they're not in same wifi
