SMS Hard Drive Help

does anyone know if the sudden motion sensor is part of the actual physical hard drive or if it is part of OSX?

I'm looking at upgrading to a seagate 7200 500GB, but I want to make sure that SMS is part of OSX and not just hard drive specific.
