Sorry, new to the phone and my wife has a "need".

She was wondering if there was a way to not have the sms messages appear on the screen when they come in. I'm guessing there's a way to do it, but none of my friends with the phone know how.

Not when the phone is sitting unlocked. To turn off the preview when the phone is locked you need to put a passcode on it.
