Since the iPod Touch now has email capability, you could send text messages via teleflip.com. Just write an email with a phone number like: 123-123-1234@teleflip.com. I think you may want to remove the dashes, but this will send an email (or "text" message) to the recipient.

There is an application called SkySMS that lets you send SMS messages by VoiP. You will need to download FreeCall and make an acountHere.
Then add this source: irepo.xwaves.net
Then go through all packages to find SkySMS and download it.
Then go to Settings > Tap the FreeCall arrow > Enter your login and password.
Then you can send texts untill your account runs out (if it does just make a new one).

That looks great. How do you actually know when they will start charging you tho? Is it really free to send these texts, as in no hidden charges or anything?
OK, just made an account and all looks good. They don't ask for any kind of credit card or anything, which seems odd. (not that I would give it out to them 😉) But how do they start charging you after your free SMS have run out?
I'm not doubting you at all VToX but I'm just a very wary person!
Does anyone else use this?
when you make an acc with freecall, you get about 5 introductory free sms, then it cost 1p per txt, to most countrys, altho some are free.
i use "sms.dynadel.com" it has a nice simple interface too
Does it work for you ? To which network are you sending messages?
