It's my understanding that every cell phone has an email address (verizon is your cell #@vtext.com) so why would you purchase an SMS plan through ATT?Can't you just email a cell # and receive an email response?

if you e-mail that number it arrives as a SMS messege.
if you want to send a e-mail from your phone, it goes as an SMS messege(if you don't have a data package/e-mail compatibility)
so if you e-mail some1 on thier number@vzw.com or whatever it'll arrive as a SMS messege.
