There is this engineering software that after you build our building in 3D, it will tell you how long it will take to build it. I mean, it knows how long takes to build each floor, the quantity of tools you need, the men you need IF you wanted finished by certain date and under certain budged. And entire project management tool.

Sure, and that's assuming the weather is perfect, there are no change orders, supplies are all there...

That is a massive building using probably close to every building trade out there, this will take awhile. Steel goes up fast, concrete can be poured fast, but come finishing time of the interior (flooring, drywall, etc) , this will take awhile to finally be done. Although I'm sure they will finish the 'public' areas first to show it off as soon as they can.

I wish Nova could have done a series on the building of this one. The logistics must be fascinating.

If I remember correctly Steve wanted to give tours and have architecture students study it but sometime after his death that seems to have changed unfortunately.

Both my father and brother are architects so if that ever happens, I will drag them along so I can get a pass :)

I love how it's called "spaceship shaped". I'd expect that to be a building in the shape of a space shuttle, or a Soyuz capsule. Or maybe a Battlestar, if you wanna get fictional. Well, I guess it does look a bit like an (old) Cylon basestar.. if it had a REALLY heavy landing.

I expect you are not at all familiar with UFO lore?

What was in that large area before the building?
HP had a campus there before which they sold to Apple, dont know if Apple ever used it, probably got demolished instantly to make room for Apple Campus 2. Apple have been buying up some smaller buildings in the area to over the years, if i remember correctly alot of them where listed in the construction plans, head over to Cupertinos website and look at the plans if you are curious

They are going to make a new one next year anyway… and the new one will be a “huge step” compared to this one so this one will have to be sold…

OK, gotcha..Wasn't sure if it was wooded area or they bought up a bunch of homes and destroyed.

That amphitheater looks more like a reactor core. Are we sure its not a component of the stardrive?

What is this miraculous software called? edit: I'm genuinely interested.

My brother flew over it and snap a pic today. :)

Sorry it's upside down.

It's massive.
And they need all this, in addition to the already existing offices, to bring out an updated iPhone once every two years?

Yeah!
All they need is two guys in a closet. They're such a small company, with virtually no employees & so few ambitions and projects. Lol, what fools to try to have more space to work in!!!

I wish you were in charge of Apple so we wouldn't have this blatant waste of resources. I'm sure you'd have them downsized in no time! Have them shut all those pesky retail stores too... I'm sure that's adding unnecessary real estate to the mix. They should own at most, one acre of land & run everything from there with a skeleton crew.

/very, very, very snide sarcasm

Yes, you got that about right. The two Steves came up with amazing things in their garden shed.
How many amazing things have Apple come up with in recent years(!)?
Where's the innovation? Where's the cutting edge?
But if it takes this megalomaniac building to get them to that point then it's all good.

*sigh*

With all due respect to the Steves...
Back when they were a teeny company, their most exciting products were a bulky PDA that never took off, a bulky original iPod (gimped by only working with Mac), & a bulky Bondi Blue iMac.

Their new industry 1st 5K computer (the new iMac) at a price the other guys are charging just for the display, their impossibly teeny Mac Pro, the very light & capable iPad Air w/ TouchID, & hotcake outselling iPhones are to me much, much, much more compelling than their original products.
It's like tech finally caught up with their imaginations! I feel like they're only just now creating the devices & services they've had in mind for many years.

Now, a large part of why they can create such products is because unlike Samsung, for example... where their components division is so separated from their mobile division that neither is allowed to let the other know what they're working on, or cut a good deal for them... at Apple, Jony has his design & engineering teams sharing the same vision and daily work space. This cylindrical building was created to foster this innovative spirit.
I'm sorry that you lack the imagination to see it as more than a "megalomaniacal", ego driven project.
That's an absurd opinion to me... but, to each their own.

I saw a documentary about a building in England and at one point they said the software they were using to calculate the construction of the building tells the engineer how many bolds they need, how long takes to build each floor and how many people and it give you an schedule. So you just need to keep supply ready to meet the deadline.

They didn't mention it but exists and it make a lot of sense. I know that for show production and stage design the software tells you what sort of lights you need and led screens and they give you the list of the materials you used.

I would keep digging into any engineering dedicated software, you bet there is a project management module for them.
