One day after it snowed, it was mild enough today to wear short sleeves during the middle of the day, or at least go without a sweater.

If it makes anyone feel any better, precipitation in Southern California is running about 20% of normal so far this season, and it looks like we're on track to get no additional rain through the first week of February at least.

You guys can have our rain if you give us your snow.

Man, if all this rain we've gotten this month had been snow, we'd be buried like Buffalo.

For me, that only take about 35°F. :p

I still see frost in the morning on the grass here in the City of Angels.

Then, this afternoon, I see that they're running the fire hydrants - I think that somewhere in So. Cal they've been having water mains or something burst....maybe that's some sort of preventative action? (what do I know about cold weather and pipes here in usual sunny so. cal....nothing, of course!)

And the rest of the country is thinking...."hmm..snowing in malibu...wasn't there a fire there last week? Must be a hollywood thing!" :D

On top of freezing weather, we got hit with really heavy winds last night. Patio and back yard looks like I'm back in Kentucky and a tornado went through.

Spent most of this morning skeering the fish (koi, wakins & comets) to death ... as I tried to pull 3 heavy statues out of the pond ... that had blown in there overnight.

Just wish we'd get back to night temps where I can enjoy my nightly splash in the hot tub. I ain't goin' out there when it's 32 degrees! Brrr!

HUGz! Jules

I liked the picture of people ice skating on the Venice canals. Very funny.

Haha!! Perhaps they can have the winter Olympics there if the canals freeze again =X

Instead of snow, today we had slow. In an unfortunate, and ironic, accident, a crane that was part of a freeway construction project fell across the 405 (San Diego) freeway near its intersection with the 101 (Ventura) freeway, in the city of Sherman Oaks.

It's already one of the busiest freeway intersections in the U.S. (or maybe the busiest) and this was afternoon, when traffic is already worst, and Friday, the worst day of the week for traffic. It's no surprise that they said this was one of the worst traffic jams in L.A. history.

Rescuers had to work for hours to rescue the trapped crane operator, and it was lucky that nobody was killed as the crane fell across the lanes of traffic. (An SUV and a truck collided while trying to avoid the crane.)

The freeway was stopped dead for 4 hours and backed up for many miles, as motorists who could go nowhere got out of their cars to wait it out. Some drivers managed to get off the freeway but the major parallel streets were also packed and also barely moving.

From what I heard, I estimate that the freeway traffic averaged 2.5 miles per hour this afternoon, not the fastest way to get across a big city.

Here is one of many news stories about it.

....
God, my mother has to travel back that way from work. Wonder if she got caught in it. Really, as if that area of the freeway was not bad enough.
Thanks for the story, Q.

Outrage!

I am outraged!!

L.A. got snowed on and I'm here in Korea DYING for some fluffy white water. Dry as Hades here. No more than the thinest possible skiff on the mountains, so far.

LA's transportation system is always one car crash, earthquake or toxic spill away from complete breakdown.
There's an easy way to get around L.A.:

1. Wait 50 to 100 years for them to finish creating a rail system that covers more than a fraction of the city.

2. Take the train!

In the meantime, the real secrets are to live close to school or work or to follow a strange schedule that's out of sync with everyone else.

I'm with you on living close to work or school, but I think the other tip (weird schedule) is becoming less useful on a daily basis. I have to travel into LA from Ventura County regularly, and always try to time my trips outside of rush hour. This used to work, but not reliably any longer. I've been stuck in some horrendous freeway traffic jams at 10 AM, created apparently by no cause other than too many cars.

I've also used the various train systems quite a bit. They're absolutely the way to go if you can make them fit your destination and schedule (not easy). On a whole, they are woefully inadequate. The routes were evidently designed by a blind man doodling on a piece of paper.

Just saw a report on yesterday's traffic tie-up. The backup on the 405 was 15 miles long. So at least everyone who was stuck in the line had lots of company.

Agreed. It used to be that you could predict that traffic would go toward downtown LA in the morning and away from it in the afternoon. Now it's just as likely to be jammed in both directions at any time of day. The 91 in Santa Ana canyon will often be jammed at noon on a Saturday, even without an accident. You just have to assume that there will be congestion when you leave the house. Then if you arrive early, you can be pleasantly surprised.
