Instead of
snow, today we had
slow. In an unfortunate, and ironic, accident, a crane that was part of a freeway construction project fell across the 405 (San Diego) freeway near its intersection with the 101 (Ventura) freeway, in the city of Sherman Oaks.
It's already one of the busiest freeway intersections in the U.S. (or maybe
the busiest) and this was
afternoon, when traffic is already worst, and
Friday, the worst day of the week for traffic. It's no surprise that they said this was one of the worst traffic jams in L.A. history.
Rescuers had to work for hours to rescue the trapped crane operator, and it was lucky that nobody was killed as the crane fell across the lanes of traffic. (An SUV and a truck collided while trying to avoid the crane.)
The freeway was stopped dead for 4 hours and backed up for many miles, as motorists who could go nowhere got out of their cars to wait it out. Some drivers managed to get off the freeway but the major parallel streets were also packed and also barely moving.
From what I heard, I estimate that the freeway traffic averaged 2.5 miles per hour this afternoon, not the fastest way to get across a big city.
Here is one of many news stories about it.
