The list mentions the GeForce 8800 GT and the GeForce 8800 GTS but no sign of the GeForce 8800 GS in my 1 year old iMac!?

That can't be right!
My iMac was purchased much less than a year ago. My ATI Radeon 2400 HD card is not supported. This is outrageous that Apple continued to sell hardware that would not be supported by its software they were writing at the time, and be released only a few months later. I'm going to do all I can to get that graphics chip upgrade, because this is really unbelievable and I can't believe how they could do this.

I thought that I would get the top notch quality in a computer by paying $400+ more than what it's actually worth just to add on to the $24+ billion that Apple already has. Now they're screwing me over? I salute a big "F U" to apple.

Never again will I buy an Apple computer.

God this makes me very irritated with Apple.

I specifically bought this iMac 8 months ago in order to have a computer which could make use of these 'amazing' new features of Snow Leopard.

I spent all my f•••••g cash on this damn thing and now it turns out it's about as much use as a handbrake on a canoe for running Snow Leopard.

I was going to buy SL, but I don't think I'll bother now. Don't worry Apple, I'm not spending £20 just to save 6GB of space.

How can you be mad at apple? You bought a computer a year before a release of a new OS and you made the assumption that it would be fully supported. Apple didn't market the computer as being 100% supported for an unreleased OS. If you needed a computer specifically for the next gen OS then you should have waited until that OS was released.

Hold on, I thought that buying a computer less than a year before a new OS was released (in some cases, only months) meant full compatibility in any other market, including the MS world.

I agree about the guy saluting the "F U" to Apple, my iMac that I paid $1200 (2.8 GHz) plus tax for is being delivered tomorrow, and before it even reaches my doorstep I know I won't be able to utilize it's GPU for Snow Leopard. I don't think I need to remind anyone that the Radeon 2600 is more powerful than the 9400M at 256 MB. I too bought/upgraded specifically for SL, and even though I bought a "last-gen" iMac, it is still a few months old. Ridiculous.

Can anyone else verify/deny that the 9600M GT GPU is used to do hardware acceleration at the moment?

I tested it out a while back before I sold my MBP, from what I saw it worked. It is also officially supported, so my guess would be yes. Of course, Apple could always screw you over along with all of the 2008 ATI-iMac owners out there, you never know.

A bunch of you guys are gonna be pissed when you find out OpenCL doesn't do ****.

Think about it. If OpenCL was a "game changer" there would have been a demo at WWDC.

You guys are pissin and moanin about your GPU and how Apple is screwin you and you don't even know what it's over.

Wake the **** up!

I would think if it "didn't do ****", Apple wouldn't even mention it as a feature. Also, It has been shown to give up to a 5x speed boost in some GPU-related apps. I don't know about you, but I think even a 2x boost in PS or in video apps would be worth it.

If I had a dollar for broken promises. Check badda bing the PC based GPU encoder. Cut commercial ...sucky output.

And what's with this insane hype. "Hey look at how fast our GPU Encoder is when you run it on four GT-295 cards which just cost you $1200"

Are you ****ing kidding ?

Do the damn demo already.

I just ordered a 24" iMac that is being delivered tomorrow. Are they seriously telling me that my 2.8 Ghz iMac with a Radeon 2600 can't do open CL, even though it clearly bests the 9400m in performance? Not happy.

That's what they're saying. Even though nVidia and AMD support their own programming tools on older model chips (see the links below), OpenCL only works on the latest generation.

http://developer.amd.com/gpu/ATIStreamSDK/pages/ATIStreamSystemRequirements.aspx

Let's remember that even though Apple was still shipping the Radeon HD2600 in 2008, that GPU was already a full generation old at the time. Apple is infamous for including obsolete graphics in their machines and releasing software updates that force you to buy a new Mac.

Even their current models demonstrate that Apple isn't completely over their obsession with shipping crap in high priced computers. As you've already noticed, the 9400 is a very weak GPU (albeit much better than Intel's integrated junk) and the GT120 (aka 9500) is the kind of thing you find at PC shops for $49 yet it's the stock GPU in a computer that sells for $2499.

I'm really hoping that once Snow Leopard is out that Apple demonstrates they're serious about OpenCL by putting better GPUs in all but entry level models. However the most recent MacBook Pro updates, which did nothing to improve on the anemic 9600M, suggest that Apple has no intention of ever giving us more than the bare minimum.

Apple is a fashion company masquerading as an electronics company.

I agree completely. Although today in Apple's refurb store, they do have some *cough* close to decent deals on the last gen Uni MBP's

I think it's come past time for someone to work out de-soldering chips from logic boards (even though it is damn hard) to replace Apple's s*** with better OS X/Mac-compatible GPUs. There needs to be a revolution in how Apple treats the price/performance ratio.

The 8800 is not sold anymore on the applestore dude ...

Sorry, had no idea.

Then again, I didn't buy mine from Apple, I flashed a PC version of the card and got it cheaper :). Check it out via Google, might be worth your while.

Well as much as I like apple computers and Mac OS X, I'm going back to PC's for my next computer. Just do the old Linux/windows dual boot I used to do. Heck if I might do that with my iMac soon. I have grown really tired of the crippled old Graphics, crapy built in monitors and them screwing people with slightly old hardware. It really blew my mind that they abandoned support for the PowerPC so soon and this just finishes me off.

Any advice on what to do with this iMac that is being delivered tomorrow? I think that sending it back would piss my family off, because getting it has been a big ordeal. I know that if I sell it I won't get what I paid back, and if I keep it I will go to bed every night knowing that I can't run the latest OS to it's fullest. *Sigh* Why does Apple have to screw me (and a zillion others) over?

I guess I can deal with not having Open CL, but I won't be happy about it.

Well, I think thats stretching it-nobody has a gun at their head to buy SL
A lot of the "I need to own it the day BEFORE release" anxious types may be bothered BUT

who says these are final specs?
who says 10.6.2 wont open up new card support
Many of you dont really need the performance upgrades being offered
Absolutely. Its just a teaser and probably of little value to most (except for the H.264 decoding) but it is rather irritating. Did Apple ever incorporate older hardware at a later date? Is there a precedent for this? Anyone know?

Guys don't rule out OpenCL support.

If your card does not have a hardware limitation that prevents OpenCL support then you may be able to get it with a future software update.

Not that I know of. Apple is infamous for releasing minor software improvements while screwing over people who just got a new machine a year ago.
