Really?

Microsoft program works like this. Microsoft ships a certain number of upgrade discs to the computer manufacturer (Dell, HP, Acer, Sony, system builders, etc.). The manufacturer then decides how and when to distribute the upgrade discs through their own personal programs.

Your specific manufacturer may have chosen to ship you the upgrade disc for free. However, many charge a basic fee $9.95-$19.95 in line with Apple's up to date fee.

And none of the major PC manufacturers are shipping Windows 7 upgrade discs to customers on Windows 7's launch date. All programs begin after Windows 7's public launch.

HP
HP has contracted with a third party company to fulfill the Windows® 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP. Orders will be accepted June 26, 2009 until February 15, 2010. Proof of purchase must be submitted and postmarked no later than March 1, 2010. You will receive your Windows ® 7 Upgrade Kit after Windows ® 7 becomes publicly available October 22, 2009.

Dell
Microsoft has publicly announced planned Windows 7 availability on October 22, 2009. If you have enrolled in the Windows 7 upgrade program shortly after the Windows® 7 operating system is made publicly available you will receive an email stating that your upgrade kit is available for order. Once you place your order online and pay tax, shipping and handling charges, you will receive an e-mail with an estimated ship date.

For certain regions, there will be a fee for the upgrade to cover tax, shipping and handling charges. Select countries will be offering the upgrade for free. The fee charged will vary by country and will be confirmed at the time you place your order. These fees are non-refundable.

Acer
There is a fee for this upgrade to cover materials, shipping, handling, fulfillment overhead and import duty. The fee will vary depending on your location and the upgrade product being requested. For some selected countries, the upgrade is free. The total charge will be presented to you prior to final submission of your order. At that time, you will have the opportunity to opt out before final order submission. The fee is nonrefundable once the order is confirmed.

Orders created after June 26, 2009 will be collected and held for processing until Microsoft's Windows® 7 general availability date.* At that time, shipments will begin in increments. All orders will be handled on a first-in, first-out basis.

For those who haven't received SL yet, I got kind words for you all:

The upgrade isn't much of anything. The speed is great and Expose' at the dock is cool but nothing to get really jazzed up about. I know that if I didn't have it I would be pissed but rest easy because SL could be lived without....for the weekend ;)

But honestly: Shutdown: 3 Seconds
Startup: 30 seconds

I sent mine in via mail using the form from the Apple site in June after I bought the machine and I've heard nothing since. My CC hasn't been charged. I think the up-to-date is handled by a 3rd party since I didn't mail to Apple. I'll probably just buy a copy in the Apple store. I have 2 Macs, and I'd need to buy one copy anyway.

I ordered mine back in June and it stays it still hasn't been shipped yet.

can anyone tell me, if the got the up to date version, if it's the same as the retail one that costs 29$ or something..
is the package the same or is it just the DVD? A picture would be perfect

I do not think It will be the same. When Apple did Leopard UTD, it was just a DVD in a plain simple paper bag without the fancy box.

I ordered the family pack and also had the $9.99 disk coming from a Mac Mini I ordered about a month ago. Got the Family Pack I ordered on Friday but not the Up to Date disk that I ordered with the new mini. That one shows it has now shipped and will be here Sept 1. I think they should have got these out at the same time. Anyway I agree the update doesn't make much difference in just normal use. It really isn't any big deal. Time Machine does go faster and shutdown is faster but that is all I really notice..

My up to date disk shipped on the 27th and delivers by the 1st. I did buy snow leopard in the store today for my imac and i must say it is faster than before.

I ordered mine from Amazon for $25 (free shipping and no sales tax).
Don't mind waiting a few days as a few problems might crop up initially.

I am perplexed as to why all the smoke and mirrors for the Tiger crowd
who want to update. Apparently, the standard $29 disc WILL work for them.
Unusual for Apple to try and pull that sort of thing.

My UTD order shipped but I dont know where the hell its going. Unless its coming from overseas i dont see why "International shipping" is being used. Im on hold with the UTD customer service now.

Update: My order is shipping today from "INDIANA" with USPS First Class, great, I wont get it till Friday. Had I known I would get this piece of crap service after buying a $1300 notebook I would of just opted to walk into the store and buy it.

and what was the ship from address on that, I need the zip code. Thanks!

No fancy packaging, just a sleeve and the insert. No box. Also says not for resale on sleeve. DVD says upgrade DVD on it.

Mine was USPS, so no signature required. Came in a yellow bubble mailer.

Shipped from Valencia, CA 91355. Pretty happy to get it today considering I live in Philadelphia.

Mine came today as well. Ship date did say sept. 1 as well. Installing now and will update with time to install and change in HD capacity.

edit: Well, it took 45 minutes to install on a mbp 2.26ghz, 2gb ram 500gb HD. The storage remaining was 411.24gb before, now it shows 451.21gb after the install of snow leopard. So all that is pretty much worthless because of the change in file info for snow leopard. If anyone wants to do the converting, have at it. I've had enough school and homework for the day.

FYI: During the install process, the screen went black for a good 30 minutes. I could hear the dvd spinning, but was unaware if anything really was happening. I hit the space bar, screen brightness and trackpad but all failed to turn the screen back on. I kept waiting and finally it turned the screen on when it booted snow leopard.

Mine came today too. Shipped on Friday. It was received from FedEx even if Apple Store's website told it was shipped through USPS.
