I'm just not seeing Apple merely adding that 'just for looks'.

What possible options are there for specifying a number as being an "iPhone" number?

BBM type messaging perhaps?

When I first noticed that I meant to come to the forums to ask the same question and just completely forgot. There has to be some reason for having a seperate category from iPhone and cell phone. I really hope they come out with a BBM type service.

Holy crap I never noticed that! It would never occur to me to label a phone number "iPhone number".

Maybe they'll give us Emoji and it will only work if SMSing someone with an iPhone. Kinda pointless, I'd still enable it everywhere via hax.

I never even considered that... Eenteresting....

I noticed this right away after the 3.0 update and was surprised at how many people's profiles I had to change for the update. iPM would be a hit in my group of friends.

any developers seeing anything that they can at least hint at without busting their NDA? :D

God I hope it's a BBM style messenger.

But, rest assured, we won't get anything of the sort before 4.0. And even then, I sadly still have my doubts.

I noticed it, but I just figured it was so you knew which one of your friends was cool like yourself.

All joking aside, maybe its to help you remember who has an iPhone for apps like "Bump."

I Noticed this, for one of my contacts i have his Home number and his iPhone number and when i was doing voice control i had to say "iPhone" to specify which number to dial

Yeah but with bump wouldn't you need a physical iPhone nearby and with that, why the need to label it? ;)

I think the label is just a "fun to have" for now, with possibly potential uses later.

I know that in my own contact list, I have those with Blackberries listed as such (instead of using the generic 'mobile' option).

I really don't think this means anything.

Do you guys also think that the 'Home Fax' label mean you'll soon be able to send messages from your iPhone to fax machines?

It's just a label.

Ya ... but it Apple ever does plan to release some kind of 'iPhone-to-iPhone' functionality, at least they'll know users will have an (at least semi-) populated database of names to work with.

No, because Home Fax is the description of a type of number just like Mobile is a type of number. An iPhone is not a type of number, it is a type of Mobile phone.

Now if they had one that said Home Fax and another one that said Canon Home Fax then I would think theres some kind of special ability with that type of fax machine.

I see it the same way as the mail signature that says "Sent from my iPhone."

Just more in-product branding and advertising.

But the sent from my iPhone thing is visible by anyone who receives your email which means non-iPhone users too so that makes sense. This wouldn't make sense because it would only be visible to those who already own iPhones.
