When I first noticed that I meant to come to the forums to ask the same question and just completely forgot. There has to be some reason for having a seperate category from iPhone and cell phone. I really hope they come out with a BBM type service.

Same here. When I first saw it I wondered what it was for and then completely forgot about it until now...something like BBM would be great.

It's so that in case you forget that you can't send a picture message, you know who you can't send one to if you actually could.

You were winning until you said 'Canadian.' :p

"iPhone" Label in contacts disappeared

If you are using Exchange to sync your contacts, the server may not allow you to label a number with the iPhone tag, or any other non-standard label.

I lost my "iPhone" label in Contacts after setting up my exchange mail account on my 3GS. I couldn't figure out why this had happened, until I saw your post. My contacts were configured to sync through my exchange account. As soon as I turned that off, my problem was solved. Thanks!

a friend of mine just got her iphone yesterday and sent me a txt message with the new phone number (she had move states etc etc).. when I went to update her contact record the number type defaulted to iphone... i had her previous number set up as a mobile. hmmmm.

Maybe Apple/ATT include something extra with the iphone to iphone texts or something? It doesn't really add any value at the moment and labeling a number as iphone or not iphone doesn't help much later as tagging a number as such for some mystery app doesn't help either, users will miss tag numbers anyway so relying on that doesnt work.
