I don't get a case to protect against scratches, I get a case to protect the glass against the inevitable drops on cement its going to face so that the glass doesn't shatter.

Did you watch apple's video where they bend the glass?

I think you'd have to *throw* your iPhone at the cement to make it shatter. At a very, very high speed.

Being bendable doesn't make it shatterproof.

I think the fact that Apple feels it necessary to push "Bumper" protective cases, speaks tons.

"Hey Genius, the front and back of my iPhone 4 shattered!"
"Did you have an Apple-suggested Bumper case on it, sir?"

At least the price is so high, third parties should be able to undercut it.

This also explains all the overpriced warranty and protection plans announced recently: "You now have a glass phone. It will break. You need a protection plan$$$!!!"

Apple killed the case industry more when the 3G and the 3GS looked exactly the same.

I don't know if i'm even going to get a case for 4. I didn't have a case for the first year I had the original, it only had one tiny dent.

I am talking about the 'sales'. Sales will decrease for sure.

if there's one thing I've learned on MacRumors in my 3 short years here, it's that the more sure someone sounds about a prediction, the lower the odds are that it will actually come to be.

Bumpers look okay, but the 4G design will surely shrink the iPhone-case industry.

Why?

If I bought an iPhone 4, I'd certainly buy a case, too. So what if the new iPhone is more durable? I buy the case for looks, and not for protection against drops. :D  :p

My WAG is that the stainless steel might be more easily scratched than the glass front or back ...

(... which would mean that the glass/ceramic is harder than the steel ... any materials engineers here have a feel for this?)

I used a hard case (covering the back) on my launch day 3GS from day one. However, I noticed about 4 months ago that dust was getting in between the sides of the case and the metal rim/ bezel. This was causing it to get tiny little scratches on the bezel.

I said "f&&k it" and took off the case altogether. Not only has my iPhone gotten lighter now, but I haven't added any new scratches to it using it "naked". I should have left it caseless from the start.

I find my gear4 tyre tread style cover not only helps the phone bounce if dropped, but also makes it easy to hold when taking a photo. Sometimes holding the 3G is like trying to hold a wet fish.

Do cases restrict connectivity?

I don't know why anyone hasn't mentioned the reason a lot of people buy a case for.

Personalization.

The iPhone only comes in 2 colours! That is lame! I hope the factories in china start pumping out different colour back and face plates! I will swap mine out in an instant!

I think I will have a case available for when my niece and nephew want to play around with it and when I am doing stuff that might be a bit more prone to impact. Daily use will probably just go with a screen protector.

Like others have said, I can only imagine that the case manufacturers are saying a HUGE "Thank you, Apple!" for redesigning the iPhone -they could only keep coming up with fresh designs for the 3G/3GS shape for so long, and people can only buy so many cases (okay, so I have at least a dozen, but you get the idea!).
Now, with the iPhone 4, it is like a fresh palette for the case manufacturers -i'm sure that they are already rubbing their hands all the way to the bank.

Newsflash: cases make your phone look clunky and boring.
Meh, that's a matter of personal opinion. Me, I like having something that doesn't look like an iPhone. :p

Also, I have a snug, tight-fitting case (most of it is pretty stiff), and I'm convinced that this offers some (little?) protection against case-flexing, which can cause cracking (of course, the new iPhone shouldn't have this problem).

People are spending $200+ for a phone, most will spend an extra $20-30 for a case just for the sake of protecting their money.

Possibly, but I'm in the camp where Apple witnessed the sales of the iPad case and wanted to repeat their success with the new iPhone.
