I have (had) an early 2008 15" MBP (1st Gen Multi-touch) that had the 8600 GT GPU in it. earlier this year I started having seemingly non graphics related issues. When closing firefox for example, the computer would just sit there processing the close for a few seconds, then the beach ball would appear for another 4-8 seconds, then the program would close. Took it to the genius bar and the diagnosed it as the GPU. They replaced the entire logic board and GPU and I had the same problem. After he second replacement and 4th trip to the Apple store, They are replacing my entire laptop with a new MBP. You don't have to have display issues for the GPU failure reak havoc.
 
You can opt out of the nvidia settlement http://www.nvidiasettlement.com/dates.html. Anyone know why any apple owner would not want to opt out? I'm not sure of what to do.
Anyone who wants the problem to actually be fixed should opt out. This is because, as I understand the terms of the settlement, "repair" means what Apple says it is today = not an actual repair of the problem, just a delay/game where you get replacement defective parts that may or may not be used. If you are "lucky" enough to have to waste time with many trips to Apple and many problems after their "repairs", then you get a laptop that's not defective.

But, I don't know if another class action is possible. Really, anyone who still has a defective machine may be able to pursue this. Apple seems to be trying to keep this from happening by replacing machines for those who play their game enough times. It would have been far simpler for everyone involved if the company had just done the right thing in the first place: replace the faulty GPU high-lead solder chips with fixed chips.
 
... you can not just keep bringing action against a company for the same item... this is the purpose of a class action lawsuit. I totally agree with what you are saying and wish Apple would behave differently but the class action suit is finallized in Dec whether we want things to be different or not.

I joined the suit because something is better than nothing even if it is only $20... and that is why the price of these logic boards doubled and jumped up to $1200 so they can burn up all the money!
 
Well my 2008 MBP just took a dump 10 mins ago:( Put it to sleep and it won't wake up. I hear the drive move but then nothing:.( I have a 7:45pm app at apple.

But the lawsuit is against Nvidia not apple right? So couldn't people bring a lawsuit against apple for knowingly using defective parts in their repairs?

Yes.

The lawsuit did not target Apple.

If people truly want the problem fixed and don't want to hope to get three repairs done or more in order to possibly get a replacement laptop...

Apple extended the warranty to cover the GPU. That is still in effect, correct? So, what's the point of joining the Nvidia suit at all? You won't get anything from doing so.

Incorrect. I will get something from the class action... I have been part of many class action suits. Just because I join this one does not say that I can not join a class action against Apple also if such an action is created. You, on the other hand, will absolutely get nothing for not joining... So, that's why something is better than nothing. We can both join an Apple suit at a later date. This action is against NVIDIA.

I'm in the exact same situation, dude.

Two weeks ago, my mid-2008 2.5GHz 15" MacBook Pro went to sleep and never woke up. I tried all the usual tricks and resets, including every RAM configuration under the sun, to no avail. When I press the power button, I get a steady light, the hard drive boots up, but no chime and no screen.

What complicates this matter is 1) no Applecare and 2) I live in Poland (though I had bought the MBP in the US), which has no official Apple store, just authorized Apple service providers. Since the MBP is US-bought, that means I have no EU consumer protection too (though it's past the standard 2-year limit anyway).

I have an amazing Apple dude in Krakow, where I live, that I took my MBP to once I had given up all hope of fixing it myself. He suspected it could be the NVidia issue, so he sent it off to the official service center in Warsaw. A few days later he gets a call back from them, saying my Mac had failed the NVidia test and I need a new logic board, which will set me back a measly 2800 zloty (about $930). I half-cried, half-laughed at the idea and told them to ship it back.

Now, I'm in the position of having no MBP for the time being and no hopes of not spending a small fortune to fix it. So far, the best idea I've had is to find a refurbished logic board from the US, get it shipped here, and my Apple dude said he'll replace it for $100. If I'm really lucky, I can get one for about $400 plus shipping (ouch!).

Any better options out there?

(And yeah, this is my third Apple laptop and the first one to fail so epically, though considering the previous ones were an iBook and regular MacBook, it's sad that the machine I paid nearly $2500 for died after just 2.5 years).

So I have to bring it to repair.

Right after purchase I upgraded memory and hard disk. Should I remove these things and revert the notebook to the original state or can I leave that stuff in?

I would say it's better to return it back to its original state.
 
OK, I reinstalled the old drive and old memory.

The guy at the Genius bar confirmed that the GPU is bad. The exchange from the logic board took only 1 day. That was really fast.

So I am happy now and I hope that it lasts a while now.

Theoretically you could run your Macbook Pro 24/7 and avoid the GPU failure. From what I remember, it's the heating and cooling of the GPU that eventually causes failure. But of course laptops are meant to be stowed and moved around so I don't see that as being a very realistic solution. Chances are that new motherboard bought you another two years of use.
 
I have a early 2008 model MBP.. its been running daily for 16 hours.. main machine.

Is there anyway to really see if i will have a failure or not? anyway to force a fail?

I posted in another thread a repeated problem I'm having with my 2007 MBP. Some members weren't sure if it's related to the graphics card issue, so I'm going to repost here and would appreciate any insight:

Just starting this week, if I'm on Safari or iChat for instance, Mac OS X freezes and everything stops... yet the mouse cursor can still move. Sometimes the screen starts flashing black and white over the frozen screen (with Safari, iChat, or whatever still open and visible behind the intense flickering). This flickering only goes on for a few seconds though, especially after attempting to force quit (which never works). The system remains frozen, requiring a manual shut-down and reboot.

Thoughts? It happened again a few minutes ago. Software has been completely up to date. Somehow I'm paranoid that the graphics card issue is back (I already had it replaced a few months ago, but at least it took about 3 years to materialize). The symptoms are completely different now...
 
It appears I lost my 15-inch Santa Rosa 2.4GHz MBP to the NVidia defect while out of town last week (of course - couldn't happen while I'm at home...:rolleyes: ). It still boots and I can get at the hard disk over the network, but both the built-in display and external DVI port are completely kaput. Does anyone have current information about expected turn-around time for the repair? Obviously a busy Apple Store could cause a delay, but are there currently any known supply issues for replacement logic boards?

I sure hope not - this is the machine I sync my iPad to, and I'm seriously cheesed I won't be able to get IOS 4.2.1 today since my machine's out of commission...:mad:

It sucks reading back through this thread to see that Apple are just installing un-modified-but-still-functional logic boards that still have the defective chips on them. But being without the machine right now I just want it working again ASAP. :(
 
Following this thread for quite some time, and having my motherboard exchanged for the 8600 problem of my 2007 SR, I wonder if there is actually such a thing as a Rev2 motherboard.

Using CPU-Z I found that my 'new' motherboard is indeed a Revision A2. Are there forum members that have turned in their RevA2 motherboards as well?

Otherwise I'd have to burn this board down before september 2007 in order to get an extra two years out of my MBP. My motherboard has been replaced one year ago, but since then I noticed that my MBP runs much cooler since. Anyone share thise experiences?
 
Well, my MBP died last sunday morning...

I was browsing the net, let the system alone for the night. Came to use it in the morning, nothing at the screen.
Black screen, the power light on, tried all the info that I could find on the apple support forum. Nothing it was gone.
Call Apple support (I'm still under Apple Care). They got me an appointment with an apple genius at my local apple store 90KM drive to go only.
Had to go just monday.
The genius told me that the Logic Board needed to be changed and the problem was caused by the Video Card.
I don't get it. I dont use it as a power horse like it is supposed to be built to.
Take good care of it, not a single scratch. In a non smoking environnement and well ventilated and temperature controled room.
Why???
Now, I don't have the same peace of mind I had before.
The genius told me that I was getting a second generation logic board with a non defective video card. I hope it's true.
My apple care ends on march 2011.
I hope that I don't need to worry about this laptop anymore.
To have a complete replacement of a laptop does the problem you have with it must be always the same?
I already had a defective battery before and now this.
Well, I'm waiting to get it back, and now I know that I will be experiencing some problems with the time machine backup, since it won't be the same serial number.
I have to start from zero again to reinstall everything.
I'm not so happy.

So I say that we weren't lucky at all. :(

I'm very dissapointed... and worried.

a little uninformed?
It isn't apples fault. nvidia used bad "beads" for their graphics card. It doesn't matter how well you treated it. Every time you turn it on and let it warm up, then off you are putting it one step closer to dieing.
Apple has replaced many computers out of warranty. There is also a lawsuit for this. There is no reason to worry.
Well problems happen with computers, its just a fact of life. No manufacturer is perfect.
You wont be able to get it replaced. It has to happen three times before they will even consider a replacement. The 4th time they will replace it with a new machine.
 
I have been replacing a ton of these logic boards. As soon as we run the test and it comes back with a code, immediate logic board replacement. Usual turn around time is one day and most customers are not too inconvenienced with it. At least Apple is stepping up and taking care of the machines.
