So day 4 with new pad and Touch ID sucking again

Touch ID on my new iPad 9.7 works flawlessly, even through plastic sleeve that it came with that I'm using as temporary case.
Works while charging or not. I use my thumb if that makes any difference.

If you place it in the exact same place every time, then it will have 12 duplicate copies of your finger print. Two weeks from now you slightly alter your placement and it gets confused and refuses to give you access.

When lifting and setting your fingerprint move it from the left edge of the button to the right, rotate it slightly after each press, ect. Basically ensure the TouchID gets your fingerprint from every possible angle.

Absolutely correct. This is how I do it. I placed my finger at different angles on the home button, and then I do my same fingerprint again. (having multiple fingerprints of the same finger is a good way to illiminate errors.) I have never had a problem with my iPad or iPhone. Not even once.

I've watched plenty of people set up TouchID. It's surprising how many of them don't read he instructions, don't follow the instructions, and then wonder why it isn't reliable.

You are using your iPad with the factory plastic still on it?😵

I think the Touch ID is also supposed to learn your finger as time goes on.

iOS does let you know when you aren't moving your finger enough while mapping each finger.

It's not strict enough. You should be doing things like putting your finger at right angles and upside down. I would say maybe 8-9 additional positions would be better, but iOS only asks you for 5-6 - this is for the 2nd run, not the first run where your finger must stay in the same position.

Whatever anyone's issue is, I've only had problems activating Touch ID on any device when my fingers are wet.

The newer versions of Touch ID are blazing fast(7Plus and 10.5 iPP). I'm unlocking instantly when I touch the sensor.

The setup is much simpler than the first version that took almost 1 second per Touch to map your finger compared to about a 1/4 second per Touch in the newer versions.

As for right angles and upside down mapping? Absolutely false. The Touch ID sensor can read your finger no matter what angle it is placed on the sensor.

I agree. I just set up my new 12.9 and had not seen all this advice on how to record your fingerprint. I just held my index finger in one position to record but am noticing that I can unlock by putting that finger on the Home button in any orientation i.e. Straight on, Sideways. This new 12.9 touchid works so much better than my first ipad with touchid, my ipad air 2. Half the time I got "try again". My 9.7 iPP touchid worked a little better but this 12.9 is great. I do however have to record my index finger, my right thumb evidently has worn off its surface.
