I never really saw the point in that but people here say it's improved their battery life, is that true for all users or is it a placebo effect?

can I restore from backup? I did that before the day I got it I think. Or does it have to be set up as new and I could only import my contacts?

Right here...
But if you restore when you get it, how do you know you are getting better battery life than one that is used as is out of the box?

Answer: You don't!
