I'm in the market for a new magic keyboard, but the new ones with touch-id seems like a real time-saver. I'm somewhat fine with my current keyboard so I can hold off for little while longer, but if the new ones are released separately from the Imacs I'll definitely wait.

If, and when do you think they will be sold separately?

The new keyboards with Touch ID require a M1 Mac to work. Apple will likely offer it separately once more of the ARM Mac lineup is released. For now, it's a perk for early iMac adopters.

I wonder what the price will be for the Touch ID model ($99?).
The current standard model is $99. Upgrading to a Touch ID model or a numeric keypad option on an iMac today costs $50 and $30 respectively.

So,

Magic Keyboard with Lock Key - $99

Magic Keyboard with Touch ID - $149

Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad - $179

will be the prices.

(Which is less than I'd have guessed if I was just looking at the products on their own. I think I'd have expected $99, $199, $249.)

I wonder when this will be available to buy? One of the downsides (and I know this is a really minor inconvenience) of using a laptop with an external display is that TouchID isn't available on the keyboard.
