So.... does anyone actually understand the (not) "always on display" algorithm?

Does anyone understand how IOS determines when to leave the "always on" screen...... always on? I glance over at it sitting on the charger at various times through the day or evening and..... sometimes it is on and sometimes it is totally off. It is almost always off when I get up in the morning. It seems to something have to do with ambient light.....but not always. I have it set to "do not disturb" at night and I thought that might be affecting it but once in a while it WILL be on when I first look at it in the morning (still in do not disturb).

It can't be an attempt to save battery...... it is always in the charge cradle (charge limited to 90%). Surely it isn't THAT dumb?

I don't get it...... what is the point of a feature called "always on display" when some of the time I have to tap the screen to get it to show me the time? Like many things Apple, it is so obtuse it doesn't make any sense.

I agree...I wish I could toggle a true "Always On" setting (where Apple may warn you it may cause excess battery drain).

It is frustrating at times when I glance over and my AOD is off...

Also, it would be nice to customize it for sure.

If you’re charging in StandBy mode, there’s an option in settings to never turn off the screen, independent of other display auto-lock settings. By default it’s set to Automatic and you can wave your hand in front of the phone to wake instead of tapping.
