so how likely is it to break your phone through hacking?

i plan on getting a phone in the morning and would like to add some apps and change some icons this weekend since i'm off. just how easy is it

It's pretty straight forward. While I use mac's, so my experience may differ once you get Installer.app on your iPhone away you will go.

I've hacked and restored my phone about 10 times in the last month.

Impossible. You can restore no matter what. 🙂

You don't even have to use the terminal anymore.

what is the recommended way to go now? i would prefer the iphone for dummies way over the most options most of which i probably dont care about...

Initial hacking:
Use the GUI installer found here to install Installer.app:
http://iphone.nullriver.com/beta/

Then install "Community Resources" and then BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH.

Modifying files:
