Okay so why is Apple so quiet about announcing how many units did it sale on the first weekend since it was announced? Last year with the 6 they immediately released the numbers Monday morning, looks like this year it wasn't a record-breaker as they had planned.

The 72-hour period (in which they collect the data) just ended 10 hours ago. Give the bean counters a little time and then they will release the numbers.

This is the first time that China was included in the pre-order so even if the numbers are higher than last year it probably means that sales are down overall.

I thought they don't count the total sold until after the actual release day when people line up and buy in store? Otherwise it's not really an accurate number, since a lot of people have opted to reserve their phone via the Apple Upgrade program, which can't be counted until the 25th?

This, though Apple still likes to throw out phrases to excite the shareholder, along with to rally the other Apple buying troops. Apple tends to release hard numbers during earnings season, and rounded numbers some time before that.

So a whole country just doesn't count? Every sale still counts and doesnt make it less than a sale.

Yeah but in past years a lot of those launch day phones were going to China anyway. :p

That's not quite what I meant .... what I meant is that since the sales in China are usually quite large in numbers that if the numbers are just past what they were last year then overall sales were down compared to last year.

They release the Monday after the 25th, they did announce on pace to beat last years 10 million opening weekend.

Apple won't release official numbers until after next Friday. However Apple has stated that Pre-orders are on track to exceed last years 10 Million pre-order weekend.
