or the RAZR v3xx I'm going to buy today affect my DATA plan? Will I still get unlimited data on a non iPhone using the same SIM. If so then that would be great to be able to use the RAZR as a bluetooth modem in 3G areas. Anybody have any idea?

As an aside, if you're already an AT&T customer and are no longer "in contract" you are eligible to upgrade to a new phone and get the 2-year contract discounted price. If you're planning on buying an iPhone tomorrow it's not a bad idea to go today and get something like a V3xx or a Sync or something along those lines to use when you're doing something (mountain biking in my case) where you don't really want to carry your iPhone with you. You'll get the discount and since you're going to sign a new 2 year contract tomorrow you're really not coming out any worse off contract-wise. You get a decent backup phone at a nice discount. I talked to a few reps and they all agree there isn't a problem doing this. Just thought I'd throw it out there so that you may feel less cheated by signing 2 years of your phone provider choice away and not being compensated for it with a discount on the iPhone.

I agree, and am thinking about doing this myself.

This has some interesting implications if it works...

You could get a backup phone that could work as a data connection for a laptop, and theoretically, all you would have to do is switch the sim from your iphone to the other phone. not a bad work-around for the 2nd largest omission from apple (first being 3g, or course).

    I hope this will work!

From the leaked AT&T Launch Guide:

If a customer decides to insert their iPhone SIM card into another AT&T device they will have the following experience:

Visual Voicemail will not be available, however regular voidemail will be accessible by pressing "1" to hear messages.

MediaNet will be used to access the internet. MMS and IM message are included in the customer's iPhone data Plan.

Contacts will not be accessible via the SIM.

But if you get a phone such as the 3G RAZR Vxx, which has 3g, will you get 3g data?

You should get 3G speed in 3G areas, but how will they

charge for it? Unlimited data or will it revert to paying by MB?

3g is not a part of the iphone data plan, so you prolly won't be able to access it, unless you add it on top of the iphone plan.

MEdiaNet prolly doesn't allow laptop tethering either, so i guess to use it as a modem you would have to add some other kind of data plan, in addition to the iphone plan.

I would have to imagine that data is data, if you throw your SIM card in another 3g phone you will get 3G speeds, IF the iPhone plan even allows data on other phones. Thats what needs to be seen. If you can throw a sim in any other phone and be able to access data, then 3g/edge just depends on where you are.

Already verfied that it does. You'll get full unlimited MediaNET access.

3G is not an extra fee either and you are allowed to use the phone as a modem tethered. I used to do it all the time.

To the original poster, I made a topic about this a few days back, and since, I've talked to AT&T and they said it'd be fine. So i've signed up and got a free RAZR V3xx. Now when I get the iPhone, I'll have a nice backup.
