My dad took me to get my license on the morning of my 16th birthday. I was so excited and passed the written and driving part with the instructor. "Okay son, why don't you take us home now that you have that official driver's license." I backed out of the space and pulled forward not turning quite enough and bumped the car next to us. Yep, you read that right, I got in an accident in the parking lot of the DMV after just getting my license.

So many stupid people in this thread. LMAO
The first time I drove I think I was eight. I taught myself how to drive stick when I was 12. I have been driving stick ever since.

Terrifying, I took a turn onto a side street and took it way too wide onto the opposite side of the road where there happened to be another car coming, thankfully I knew how to use the brake.

It was scary at first. Being used to driving a go cart with a whimpy 5 HP and going WOT all the time to the amazing max speed of 28 MPH, getting in my moms 2002 Chevy Suburban with a 290 HP 5.3 V8, pressing the throttle a little bit made the vehicle just jump forward and it scared me. But, I got used to it as I was driving it up the driveway.

It was my favorite vehicle learning in despite its huge size. It was easy to get use to knowing how much throttle and brake application needed to get going and stop. Where my moms old POS 2001 Chrysler Sebring thought it was a Corvette and launched as soon as any throttle application was applied( and then losing all power afterwards) and my dads 2002 BMW 330xi had really firm brakes and the throttle was funny to me at the time. I got used to both after time( though we dumped the Sebring by the time my drivers test came around), but the Surburban was not as sensitive to inputs to it was good for a novice driver like me. :)

My first time driving on the actual road (not rearranging cars in the driveway) was last February when I got my temps. I drove my '99 Saturn which is a stick. Some of the stories here about people not even knowing what to do is shocking. I knew pretty much exactly what to do, I guess riding quads since I was 6 helped, especially with shifting. I just finished driving school two weeks ago, and I take my license test December 2nd.

I first learned how to shift and keep it between the lines in a 49 Willys Wagon, sitting on my dads lap. At eleven i helped replace the clutch in my sisters 69 Beetle, and got to test drive it around the neighborhood...several times...by myself.

i raced go karts starting when i was 7 i stopped at 13 and im 15 now. My first time driving was in my moms car when i was 13. I was in my moms car and i was nervous so i probably topped out at 15-20 MPH.

Second in my moms car the last night before we sold it. We went into an empty parking lot and i floored it :) she yelled alot lol.

third time is recently i move my grandmas car up and down the small driveway lol. Nothing like making a civics wheels spin in snow.

my first time was a few months back. i had already turned 16 but i started my drivers ed. late. my behind the wheel, i just drove like a mad man in a parking lot. my turns were extremely rough and everyone shifted around a lot when i turned. i think my instructor was terrified. anyways, a few months after, i can easily do about 70 w/ out feeling tense due to lack of experience. Until a few months back, my parents didn't even let me near the car. :D and for good reason too. oh and unlike some ppl here, i've never ever been in a go kart. My instructor was appalled when i told him this.

Bah cars

If you thought a car was exhilarating, imagine riding one of these babies done a steep STEEP hill.

I've been racing go-karts on and off since I was about 9, and I've been playing Gran Turismo since I was 5, so I don't know if that helps!

But my first real time driving was in my Dad's '08 WRX in a few backstreets... I was 15. Pretty much bunny-hopped half the time though  Driving at 60km/h felt like I was doing 100km/h at least!

Now I have my L's at 16, and I've adapted to what different speeds feel like...even though the fastest I've driven is about 90km/h :p

Was about 14 years old on a relatives field in Poland. My dad tried to teach me how to drive. Couldn't do it at all and since then (I'm 23 now) I've only been behind the wheel one more time.

I was 9 years old. My mom had a migraine which was so bad that she let a 9 year old drive a 1969 SS Chevelle. It was awesome! drove 3 miles and stopped as every car passed by. My sisters werent to fond of me driving then.

The first time I drove a car was on my first driving lesson when I was 19.

I was obsessed with motorcycles at the time and had no interest in cars whatsoever. I'd been riding a Kawasaki Z650 for 12 months, so my first drive in a 998cc Mini passed without the slightest hint of excitement. :)

The first car I drove was a newer Toyota 4Runner. I drove it in a friend's driveway for about 50 feet at literally 3 MPH. :D

The first car I REALLY drove (on the road at over 3 MPH) was my grandma's 2005 Lexus Ls430 sedan.I didn't have my license or permit at the time but since she is cool with that stuff, knows every cop in their somewhat small Long Island town, and about one car per week drives down their neighborhood street, she let me do it. Thankfully I didn't get into trouble that time but driving it back from town once I slid on their pebble driveway right into the hedges surrounding the property. Just popped it in reverse and drove up the drive and into the garage. No damage on the car, grass, hedge or anything. Just two skids in the pebbles. (FWIW, I WAS a legal driver at this point in time!)

1975 my Dad took me out driving for the first time. We had a 1970 Mercury Capri stick shift. He parked it on a hill near our neighborhood, put on the emergency brake and told me to get in the driver's seat. "Ok son, if you are going to learn to drive you need to know how to drive a stick," he said. Of course learning the clutch and gas and brakes was tough at first. Those who have driven a stick know what I mean. The car bucked, rolled backwards, stalled. After about five minutes I had it. One of the best lessons ever.

Me and a few girls "stole" my dads spare van in the middle of the night a few years ago and went for a cruise. I only drove 5 minutes or so, but that was my first time. :)
