so the m4 max chip with 14 core cpu 32 core gpu and 16 core neural engine is more than enough cpu/gpu for me

36 gb ram looks good.

a 2tb ssd should be good.

I pay about 2339 with veteran discount. So what is there to think about doing this to replace my 1tb 32 gb i5 2018 which is long in the tooth by now.

this seems to be a no brainer.

I moved on from my 2018 mini last year to base model studio, like what you're looking for except for external 2TB via enclosure + NVME SSD. No regrets. Great time to move on.

I'm replacing a 2017 iMac Pro. I still like the iMac Pro but it crashes a lot with BridgeOS conflicts and a 2nd monitor.

That seems like a very nice purchase. Are you really going to get any use of that heavy hardware? If so, it’s a good purchase and even if not if it’s something you like then it’s still a good purchase. As someone said above, just don’t overspend and get into a pinch. I know when I go on the Apple website I just look at all the cool things and think wow I can buy this and buy that and then I think do I really need any of that. I’m so tempted to buy a close to maxed out MacBook Air right now, but that would be ridiculous because I have no need for this. I might buy a mid range MacBook Air and while I have no need for it at least it’s a more reasonable purchase for what I do.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Let me check education and see if it is cheaper.
Apple got rid of some of the EDU discounts on the first-step upgrades (on the upgrade ladder), though further steps still include the 10% discounts.

Also, MicroCenter sometimes have base models priced at the EDU price, and occasionally has higher-spec skus too.

So does Costco.

But, if you have Apple Store credit then that may not matter.
