I just got a Canon SD500 7.1MP Digital Elph.

$229, Amazon.com.

I love Canon almost as much as Apple, but I read that these are plagued by purple fringing. Is it as bad or worse that my previous camera, the SD200?

Since you have the camera, does the pictures you use have purple fringing that bothers you? If not, I wouldn't worry about it =) PF is also relatively easy to remove in photoshop.

As for has it improved, I think, yes, the purple fringing has definitely improved since the SD200, it's a good lens. Enjoy the camera!

Here and there!
I have the SD400, and have never had any problems with purple fringing - here's a small sample of one of mine...the artifacts are from the resizing.
