i've noticed some issues when saving as a word document. sometimes some of my formatting is altered. as far as usability go, i like pages a whole lot better than word.

As good or easy to use is personal opinion. I find Pages easy & mostly intuitive, others don't. But if you're expecting Pages to be Word, you will be disappointed. iWork was announced as "building the successor to AppleWorks" by SJ at Macworld San Francisco in 2005. My take on that announcement is that iWork is aimed at the home/educational user as AppleWorks has been. I have never seen anything from Apple saying it is a competitor to Office.

If you want a cheap alternative, how about NeoOffice? It's considered to be an "Office clone" & is free.
