I’ve had it for about a year now. I’m not great with how contracts work nowadays, but I believe contracts have actually been done away with? I have verizon. Does anyone know if it’s possible for me to get the 8 at launch? Hope this isn’t a dumb question, but if anyone has any advice for me please let me know!

Go ahead and pay off 50% or more of your current phone, and you will then be eligible for an upgrade. Contact your local Verizon store to confirm.
Call Verizon. No one here knows the specifics of your plan, contract, etc, etc.
Is this an iPhone-only thing or a "new" plan that is secret ? We have "THE NEW VERIZON PLAN" and our situation is (2) recently purchased iPhones (2-3 months ago), my iPhone 6+ (handed down from my wife - 100% upgrade eligible currently), and a Motorola Droid Turbo. The Droid Turbo is 83% paid off but the only way to upgrade now is to pay it off first.
