..., by downloading it from somewhere else and then installing it on my iPhone 3G, am I correct in assuming that I do not need to try to install whatever build becomes available through iTunes today? I just want to make sure that the two 7A341s are really and truly *identical*.

I'm going to say it will be a new build released today. :)

The release after today will probably be 3.01 and you will be prompted to install it. However, since the new build is new within hours why not just wait?

Since I used the past tense "installed" in my question, you can safely assume I've already updated my iPhone.

If its different then the build number on the file will be something other than 7A341. There will not be two builds with the same number that differ (...gah flashbacks to 10.0 GM builds!!! DEBUG CODE!!)

    Where?
You did not use the word "installed" anywhere in here, in fact you seem to mention the opposite.
And in the title it says: IF i installed, which points to you not doing it yet.:rolleyes:

Really, well last year the 3G shipped with 2.0 5A345, but the version that showed up on the servers on 2.0 launch day was 5A347.

Not saying it'll happen again, but it DID happen.

Probably so it can be completely restored if you need to.
