So if quad core iMacs are eventually released then...

Personally think we'll see Quad Core iMacs hopefully in the next update OR definitely the one after that. I don't think we'll see the much speculated on Apple mid-tower for a long, long time (if ever). The idea of a mid tower PC like Apple Mac seems to be at odds, design wise, with Apple's direction as a "lifestyle" technology company in the home place.
The biggest reason why we have not seen mid-tower targeted at the everyday user is that it would completely cannibalize the top end of the iMac line.
This is unfortunate and also one of the bigger mistakes I've seen Apple make in a while. Of course, that's only seeing things from my perspective. I wonder how much apple really cares about correctly positioning their computers so that people will want to buy them. It seems to be they've been taken over by some sort of mad industrial designer scientist and it's now form over function and making sure things look cool above all else. I think Apple consumers deserve more than this. We're not that stupid.
Having said all that, I just ordered a top of the line iMac yesterday. 🙂

Considering *Quad notebooks have been out since 2007, proving it possible to run one in a smaller form factor machine, I think it entirely reasonable to think Apple will drop Quad puppies into an iMac sooner or later.

Why they haven't already is threefold:
1. They want quiet, cool machines; (outweighs nothing-much bragging rights).😉
2. As yet, the 'average' consumer (think iMac user) has had no real need for the extra horsepower. This will change soon enough though, (post SL esp), as new/updated software is designed to take advantage of more multiple core machines.😎
3. It has been cheaper; Apple likes the cash $$$$$$$🙄
Exactly. If you think they will never have a quad core, you are basically saying Apple will never make a new iMac after this one.
Any idea what the Core i7 chips are, even the lowest 920?

I'm picking the iMac will go Quad in Q1 2010, but only after the MBP gets there first!😛
Its easy to, I was looking at a big performance chart on the Intel line.
It seems COMPLETELY counter intuitive that a 7000 series is faster than an 8000 series at the same clock speed.
They need to change their methods. Hopefully the i7's will do this. So far its been 920, 940, etc. I can deal with that.
