If someone sends it to your phone number - it will only go to iPhone as iPad cannot receive phone numbers.

It does seem that thus far iMessages sent to the iPhone's phone number do not get synced to the iPad as well but ultimately both devices are registered to the same Apple ID so it should not be difficult for Apple to implement.

I am hoping this is added as a feature.

You have to send the message to your email address to get it on your iPad. There is no linking of phone number to iPad.

The API exists for iChat integration.... That's all we can say for certain at this time...

It's only for messaging, that being said its set up like a phone. There are no friends lists or anything like that so there is no statuses. This is the difference, will it be as popular as BBm? Idk but for the people who used BBm thors factors will be the deciding factor.

This has been established.

It would be easy enough for Apple to implement, however, and considering the whole 'seamless sync across all devices' concept of iCloud, makes sense to at least offer as an option for those who want it.

But then what happens when you reply? Would it bounce off Apple's servers, go to your iPhone, and then get sent out as an SMS? It could get emailed directly to their phone (most carriers have a way to email to a 10 digit phone number) but then it wouldn't seamlessly appear as if it came from the phone number they originally messaged.

Palm solved this by making the the SMS intergration with the Touchpad happen over a local proximity bluetooth connection. Otherwise I think it gets complicated.

In no way is iMessage a flop, who wouldn't want free texting to other iOS devices?

No... It would get sent via iMessage?

So in terms of starting a conversation on your iPhone, and then picking up where you left off on an iPad, it's a bit of a fail?

Non of my friends will be sending me an iMessage to my email address as hardly anyone knows it!

Oh well, hopefully Apple can fix it at some point :)

No. I tested this by removing the email address of my brother from my contacts, but keeping his phone number. I know he uses iMessage. When I went to compose the message, it changed to iMessage instead of text message. As long as your phone number and/or email address is tied to your AppleID, it'll work.

I'm pretty sure this will be the case. Seems kinda pointless to advertise the "pick up on any device" thing. If I'm going to use an email address to send a message I'll be sending an email lol.

I think he's talking about sending a message to a phone number, having it change to iMessage and have it not be sent to both an iPhone and iPad.

Ah, ok. Well, give out your email address.

This is massive fail.

Apple should have your phone number tied into their database under your AppleID... W T F.

My thoughts exactly. This will keep me from using iMessage over What's App....that and the fact there is no separate app thus I won't even know who out of my friends have an iOS device.

But only if the other person has an iPhone? The iPhone can send messages to phone numbers because if it can't use iMessage it can always revert to SMS. An iPad can't send SMS messages. If someone without an iPhone sent your phone an SMS, I don't see how you would expect to be able to reply from your iPad unless you paired your iPhone and iPad like the Touchpad method I described above.

Actually when you write a message, when starting to type the recipients name, if they have an iOS 5 device they will have a blue speech bubble next to their name.

I know but I'd just still rather just know from looking at my contact list. Not too much to ask I wouldn't have thought.

iMessage will effectively replace SMS on iOS 5 iPhones. So all your contacts will need to be on iOS 5. If iMessage sees both sides as being registered with iMessage, it goes through that. If not, it goes through SMS, if not and you're on an iPad, it doesn't work.
