Just stop holding the phone so wieldy.

I have been practicing this all day, and I don't understand how some of you can hold the phone so awkwardly and unwieldily.

You can easily hold an iPhone with two or three fingers, which allows you better placement and maneuvering. This not only helps with the signal but also likely with the proximity sensor.

I just don't understand why anyone would hold the phone with a palm death grip wrapped around the phone be it right hand or left hand. it is awkward, uncomfortable, and unnecessary.
THIS! If you hold the phone normally it doesnt even get deep set into your palm! We have fingers for a reason people.

I find it VERY hard to believe this many people are not seeing the issue. So far 5 people I know who have the phone are all having this issue so I would question if the people who say they don't are really testing it the correct way.

2 iphone 4's here in orlando, the signal is excellent and can't be disturbed by my finger.

i did have some funkiness losing my wi fi connection while sitting right in front of my computer and router last night tho...

While driving yesterday I was able to get the signal to drop to 2 bars by completely covering the entire phone with both hands, but after I let go it stayed at 2 so I'm certain we were just passing through a low signal area.

today everything is perfect, I even licked my finger and covered the seam and touched all parts of the antenna and phone.

NO SIGNAL LOSS WHATSOEVER HERE!

enjoying the new monster!

I can't replicate this problem after multiple attempts over 2 days in different locations. Absolutely no change in bars no matter how I hold the phone.

this is obvious and no you dont need to death grip the phone in daily use.

but people are upset, and rightly so, because this shouldnt be an issue in the first place. you shouldnt have to be wary of how you hold the phone, no matter if its a stupid way to grip it or not. It just shouldnt be something thats in the back of an iphone users mind. especially from a 4th generation when the first three were just fine.

It's easy.

They're standing so close to a cell tower that they get a signal 10,000 times stronger signal than needed for the phone to report 5 bars. They short out their antenna so that it only gets 0.01% of the usual signal, still get 5 bars, and report no problem.

All they have to do is go someplace where they barely get 4 to 5 bars (part way into a tunnel, underground basement, bank vault, or elevator might do if they live some place covered with high power cell towers.) Then they'll see the problem. I used to work in the middle of a steel walled building across the street from AT&T, and barely got 1 bar in my office with my 3GS on my desk. Had to walk over to the window facing AT&T to make reliable cell phone calls.

But standing next to that AT&T building, I can short out the bottom of my iPhone 4 and still get 5 bars. At home, in a back room where I got only 3 bars with my 3GS, I get 5 bars with my iPhone 4 on the table, 3 bars holding my iPhone 4 in a bumper case, and 0 bars (searching) if I take it out of the case and hold it tightly over the lower left gap. With a 2" strip of masking tape covering the lower left side, I get 1 bar.

So, for me, an iPhone 4 in a bumper causes about the same number of bars to appear as my bare 3GS.

ymmv.

You don't have to be wary of how you hold your phone. Just hold it like a normal person.

i have found with Orange in the UK that if i hold it as per the videos i do drop to one bar and then if i call it from another phone it goes to voicemail rather than ring however whether this is a problem in the day to do use of the phone is another matter, i have not noticed any missed call issues,

i have a far bigger issue with the proximity sensor, it just does not work like on the 3gs, keeps allowing me to mute calls.

You guys should really try the speed test app that gizmodo is recommending. I tried it on SFO's AOA and I was able to only drop one bar, but I saw a 1300kbps drop in download speed and about 20kbps drop in upload speed. I just tried it here in the international lobby and while the bars didn't go down, I did get about a 200kbps drop in download and only a few Kbps in upload.

Yesterday and this morning I couldn't get the bars to go below four at home and I live on one of the highest points in Daly City. I was however able to get the bars to drop to none at Ranch 99 and at my moms house on the coast between daly city and Pacifica.

I'm pretty confident there is a problem with the phone. Even though it hasn't really bothered my usage, it's there, and I'm hoping all I need to fix it is a software update.
