I've seen foldable phones and they just seemed like a gimmick. Last night I had dinner with a friend who had the new Galaxy Z Fold 7.

I own every product in the Apple store and this was the first thing I've seen that made me want to ditch my iPhone. I couldn't believe how amazing it was. Folded it was thinner than my iPhone 16 Pro Max. Videos on the open screen were breathtaking, and there was no hint of a seam down the middle. And this this is so thin when opened you just can't believe it.

I haven't been to MacRumors in awhile, so I went and looked and they peg an Apple foldable phone for fall of NEXT YEAR.

What in the world is going on at Apple? They have all the cash in the world, all the top people, and they just can't do this stuff?

Honestly, this phone made my iPhone look like a Gen 1 product. If you haven't held one, you will first be amazed at the phone itself, but as that wears off you will just get madder and madder thinking about how Apple missed this. It's like the company has been asleep for five plus years.

Not everyone wants a foldable.
I 100% agree. They weren't on my radar. I've seen others and thought they were awful. This product was really eye opening. It is a serious generational leap, at least for phones available in the US. Find someone who has one and you will start to see how other foldables were more proof-of-concept and this is one that is real-world awesome. I'm not trying to pitch them, again, I'm 100% Apple and have been since the Macintosh SE20. I'm just mad Apple isn't the one finally making a foldable that is worthy of consideration. When you look at the incremental stuff they're going to push out this fall, it's laughable.

Apple has always been behind on new designs. It took Samsung this long to get this close on a foldable and Apple's version will most likely have a good head start on its first generation. Besides, not a lot of folks dropping $2K USD on a phone these days.
Holy moly, I didn't realize it was $2,000! I had never even heard of the Fold 7 before dinner last night. I know nothing of the Android world at all.

Samsung and Apple have a symbiotic relationship. Samsung is going to supply the screens for the foldable iPhone. It took Samsung 5 tries to get the screen right. Now that they have they are going to get a massive order from Apple next year. Think of Samsung as Apple’s testing ground.

I think it is unreasonable to be mad at Apple for not having a folding phone sooner. What is more important to you, being happy with what you have or constantly trying to show off to others?
It's got zero to do with showing off to others. It's about being able to read PDFs without zooming in, have plenty of room for two full phone-size apps to be open side-by-side, and have it all be the size that when closed the outside screen is an amazing phone all by itself and still thinner than a flagship iPhone.

Perhaps it’s because it wasn’t on your radar, as you put it. Foldables have come a long way, but I’d think most people here are already quite aware of the technology and its remaining flaws, such as creases, hinge wear, dust issues, and app scaling.

Apple is likely holding back to try and perfect these weak points before launching the device, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There’s still room to be impressed while remaining realistic.

For better or worse, I think Apple can also be held to a much higher standard by very disparaging consumers.

Lmao. Apple's foldable is slated to cost $2k, and based on dimensions and features, it will be both a worse iPhone and a worse iPad than what you could buy for much less than $2k.

No one is excited about that prospect other than the boredos.

And boy, will they let you know. You'd think non foldable lovers belive apple will not only discontinue all other devices, but also steal their first born, cause a world wide shortage of food, and lead to the robot uprising if apple DARE release something that isn't explicitly tailored to them..... And then buy it anyway and post on Mac rumors how "Apple has broken the code for making a good foldable"

Translation: "I don't like anything not for me and a trillion dollar company should listen to me and me oy for their product dev road map"

Seriously, you people are worse than the iPad haters that then went on to buy it anyway.
That's not what was said or implied and you know that but you jumped straight ahead to the hysterics & the ad hominems.

Foldables looks ”cool” but are more of a gimmick, so they are not usable for me (at least not yet).

Sure it’s nicer reading documents and books maybe, but it’s not good enough for actual multitasking and the screen is actually often smaller when viewing media/movies.

I think Dave2D shows the issues clearly in his review:

So true! Never thought of it that way 😎
