Other So mad at Apple (Galaxy Z Fold7)

Lmao. Apple's foldable is slated to cost $2k, and based on dimensions and features, it will be both a worse iPhone and a worse iPad than what you could buy for much less than $2k.

No one is excited about that prospect other than the boredos.
I’m excited about it and yet, I’m not a “boredo.” 🤣🤣

If they do it right, it will be huge for Apple.

Holy moly, I didn't realize it was $2,000! I had never even heard of the Fold 7 before dinner last night. I know nothing of the Android world at all.

Have a look at Huawei's $3,600 tri-foldable Mate XT

It's got zero to do with showing off to others. It's about being able to read PDFs without zooming in, have plenty of room for two full phone-size apps to be open side-by-side, and have it all be the size that when closed the outside screen is an amazing phone all by itself and still thinner than a flagship iPhone.
You didn’t mention any of that in your OP or other replies. Seems to me if those kinds of things were a priority on a phone, you would have focused on that instead of ranting about Apple and mentioning how cool your friends phone was.

Sounds to me like you are really mad that the phone can’t be used as an iPad at this point in time. You would have less friction if you used the right tool for the job instead of expecting the phone to be something it isn’t.

Apple isn’t known for being first. They seem to wait deliberately to see where the market is going.
In my opinion they are not usually the first to market but I think they are often the best.

Just a personal preference, but I enjoy having products on the horizon to look forward to.
Oftentimes having isn’t as good as wanting.

I 100% agree. They weren't on my radar. I've seen others and thought they were awful. This product was really eye opening. It is a serious generational leap, at least for phones available in the US. Find someone who has one and you will start to see how other foldables were more proof-of-concept and this is one that is real-world awesome. I'm not trying to pitch them, again, I'm 100% Apple and have been since the Macintosh SE20. I'm just mad Apple isn't the one finally making a foldable that is worthy of consideration. When you look at the incremental stuff they're going to push out this fall, it's laughable.
Incremental is not a bad thing. Apple innovated more than anyone else, many times changing the paradigm like with the recent Vision Pro, which is constantly attacked on this forum, but still technologically impressive. Apple Silicon is incredible and getting better and better every year which is an innovation by itself. New OSes are pretty cool and even if you can’t sometimes appreciate little changes from a (especially non pro) iPhone to the one released the year after, try to compare iPhone 16 with iPhone 12 or 13.

I've seen foldable phones and they just seemed like a gimmick. Last night I had dinner with a friend who had the new Galaxy Z Fold 7.

I own every product in the Apple store and this was the first thing I've seen that made me want to ditch my iPhone. I couldn't believe how amazing it was. Folded it was thinner than my iPhone 16 Pro Max. Videos on the open screen were breathtaking, and there was no hint of a seam down the middle. And this this is so thin when opened you just can't believe it.

I haven't been to MacRumors in awhile, so I went and looked and they peg an Apple foldable phone for fall of NEXT YEAR.

What in the world is going on at Apple? They have all the cash in the world, all the top people, and they just can't do this stuff?

Honestly, this phone made my iPhone look like a Gen 1 product. If you haven't held one, you will first be amazed at the phone itself, but as that wears off you will just get madder and madder thinking about how Apple missed this. It's like the company has been asleep for five plus years.
Ignore the haters. My brother has one and I love it. Waiting for Apple to get theirs going

Z Fold 7 is a great superb phone. And once you put Good Lock on it, you get so much more control of how the phone looks and acts. Control your animation speeds, your icons, every little menu and toggle. You also have the edge panel, which is like a real dock and not that little shelf on the bottom row of an iPhone. After a couple days of use you start to see how little Apple thinks of power users. The most enthusiastic tech nerds are the ones getting ignored by Apple. And when Apple eventually launches a folding phone it will be like all the announcements of “gaming is finally a thing on the Mac.” They will put a lot of hype into it initially, but where will it be in 2-3 years? Android has been perfecting multitasking on phones for years (started split screen on phones in 2016). Apple has so much work to catch up that the first couple folding phones will probably feel like “this is the folding phone you give your grandma” and not something for people who want to multitask on a tablet they can put in their pocket.

Foldables looks ”cool” but are more of a gimmick, so they are not usable for me (at least not yet).

Sure it’s nicer reading documents and books maybe, but it’s not good enough for actual multitasking and the screen is actually often smaller when viewing media/movies.

I think Dave2D shows the issues clearly in his review:
I wanted to buy one but a couple of things held me back:

1. The phone itself is amazing, design wise, but the camera quality is obviously not as good as a slab phone.
2. The inner screen while good for multi tasking is not really that great for media consumption i.e. letterboxing effect.
3. The price here in Australia is nearly AUD 3000. That’s the cost of 2 new M4 MacBook Airs!
4. I would have to leave behind my Apple Watch and AirPods Pro that I use extensively.

Competition is always good. Let’s see what Apple has for us next year !

Yes! Like Siri is probably something one gives’s to their 5 year old to play with 😂

But that is what is cool, you can do more things than taking phone calls and messages on your phone. You don’t have to bring a bag with an iPad with you wherever you go if you want to do something more than what the restrictive small screen on a phone allows.

What is annoying is Apple basically re-releasing last years phone in a new colour every year for the past 5 years. This fall they seem to do something new at least with the Air but compared to how they used to push boundaries with iPods and iPhones it is sad they have become so stagnant.

I am trying to decide if I should vote with my wallet or not now, switch over to Android and cancel all subscriptions I have for iOS apps or Apple services.

Apple makes sure it’s right rather than first. If one wants to be the first with some new tech android fits the bill. If one wants a solid implementation then apple is your company.
Yep. Digital assistants, artificial intelligence, online services… apple wasn’t first, but they are the best! 🤣

foldables are nothing but a gimmick.
Not everybody wants one and they are just fragile and super expensive.
Go buy a Samsung if you wish.

It would be hard to leave the Apple ecosystem, but those phones are enticing - and available now.

I have zero interest in foldables.

Switching is not that tough in my experience (did it back when Pixel 4a first came out) and especially nowadays with better import capabilities, integration, RCS messaging, etc.

I have one iPad 9.7" Pro for occasional FB and FT use. All my contacts "green" or "blue" have no issues with text one-on-one, in mixed / all one or the other group chats. I share files between my Chromebook, Mac's and S25U with (free) LocalSend app.

Sync your iPhone/macOS contacts to Google contacts.
Disable iMessage
Port number to new Android device
Import data (Samsung's Smart Switch worked well for me)
Migrate Notes to Google Keep (or some other app)

...

But some do, and there is no offering from Apple hence the frustration.
Lots of people seem to get 'frustrated' when they believe Apple is 'behind'. Foldables are just the current incarnation of that. I could understand it if Apple wasn't a billion dollar company in no jeopardy of disappearing overnight.

But there are already many foldables on the market. So if a foldable is something that is desired, why is there frustration with Apple not offering one? This frustration then has to be about something else, IMO. Apple not offering a foldable is thus a convenient ruse and not the real issue. Is it possible that other manufacturers offering products that compete successfully against Apple is the real frustration? Apple must dominate all fields? Or perhaps the desire for a foldable stops at the 'cost' of exiting Apple's ecosystem to get it?

I myself am not frustrated…which I believe should reveal where I stand on the matter.

You'd have to leave the Apple eco-system to get one of the currently available foldable phones. That is the real issue for me.

It's not a matter of it being too difficult to switch, it is much more - why would I switch? The alternatives are not better for my uses.

For me the frustration comes from building up a big ecosystem with products and services from a company that used to push boundaries but has shifted to playing it safe and rehash the same things as last year in a different colour instead.

Sure I can take the hassle and cost to rip out every Apple product and service, but the company changing direction forcing me to do that if I want what I used to get with Apple products is what’s frustrating.
