iPhone 8/Plus So much for “iPhone batteries are great when they’re new but then go to crap”

I used my phone pretty heavy yesterday at work. I had a family issue that I was discussing with my wife. Most of the messages were sent thru my Apple Watch, so that counts as usage since it goes thru my phone to send them.

I have read for years about how iPhone battery life is so great when the phone is new, but people always warn “it’ll go to **** in 5-6 months like every other iPhone.” I’m here to tell you it’s still solid as ever. Can you imagine if the 8 plus had an Android sized battery of 3300-3500mah? It would literally last a light user an entire week.

I’ve had this iPhone since December and it is still impressing me. I’m curious to see how iOS 12 affects things.

If you need a new phone today, you can do a lot worse than an 8 plus.

I agree! Solid for me that I can get 10-12 hours battery life on X. I believe some users may abuse their device by constantly charging to 100% or fast charging that may generate too much heat.

You may be able to save a bit more battery if you use airplane mode with WiFi calling. Cellular data will drain battery constantly looking for better signal.

Ive seen that on here a lot. Probably due to how IOS11 initially ran on the older phones, but its a known complaint from people that iphone battery life apparently takes a big dip after 6 months.

I think that those type of posts are usually related to a new version of iOS having some effect on battery life for some people. Can't say I've seen much in the way of simply timing as short as half a year playing much of a role.

No offense, but the above pics point to horrendous battery for an iPhone 8 Plus. If you were on LTE the whole time, then it might not be too bad. But if you were on WiFi then even my new X performs very close to this.

LTE all day at work with very low signal.

Battery life and wear is dependent on a lot of user-specific factors. My previous phone, before my current 8 Plus, was an iPhone 6. In my observations it showed very little battery decline in over 3 years. Never failed to get me through the day, at least.

Other people complain after 6 months that they need to charge their phone multiple times a day.

The Plus models have a much bigger battery, never heard a Plus user actually complaining. The regular 4.7" iPhone battery might not be as good, still good though.

I would have switched years ago, but I always saw my iPhone friends reaching for a charger and I knew the batteries were on the small side. Wish I had known this before wasting thousands on androids

Apple is into keeping things thin and a battery that would last someone who lived on their phone all day, would be unacceptable to the average user.

I really think they could make a killing offering a plus sized smart case. I would buy one for $100 and keep it in my car.

This could possibly be down to the fact that iPhone users are so satisfied with their experience that they like to use the device more compared to Android users, on average.

Other than some very specific models, most android phones have really bad battery optimisation thanks to carrier / OEM bloatware.

Also, an 8 plus is still new. I mean, you cannot use the latest model as an example for that. The phone is still new. I agree with your statement (I have an iPhone 6s on iOS 9 with flawless battery life) but an iPhone 8 plus isn't the greatest example to illustrate what you're saying.

The new update is extremely solid. Still showing 100% capacity (not sure I believe this part) and I’ve never even seen the phone hit 20% and trigger low power mode.

Its been 6 months and its only getting better. All i need is for it to last all day, and it more than does that. Even if it gets much worse, ill still make it an entire day. 6h usage is as much as i ever use, and im still at 50%.

Apple did make improvements in batteries and power consumption yearly, especially on the 8/8+/X. Although 5 to 6 months degradation is a bit hyperbole, older iPhones, especially the ones with smaller batteries compared to their peers (iPhone 5, 6S, etc), battery life can really be an issue with age.

I have a 6S, and even with the battery replaced under the replacement program, I can barely last a day (even with power saving mode on). But I don’t expect it to last for weeks either since it has the smallest capacity over all the 6/7/8 iPhone family. You cannot expect magic from chemistry and physics. And just like you mentioned, Android needs larger battery to reach similar battery life, so I can’t imagine how long an iPhone can last with 4000-5000mAH that some Android phones have.

I know a lot of average users and they all seem to complain about battery life on iPhones as their number 1 gripe. Most were also happy when we hit iPhone 5 thinness.

Iphones fly thru battery if you use the camera heavily.
