Sport box next to iPhone 6 Plus and iPad Air 2. (Thicker than both as well.)

Not complaining, just found it interesting after how impressed I am by Apple's normally minimal box design.

The box designs are great, but they are somewhat contradictory to this:

Jony Ive said:
“We didn’t want the packaging to be a sort of shorthand for value, where the box needs to be big and we have to include expensive materials. We’ve always liked the idea that if we are heavy in our thinking, we can be much lighter in the implementation. So there’s huge virtue, I think, in keeping the packaging small: at least, it is the right choice environmentally, it’s easier to move things around and you don’t end up with your wardrobes full of large watch boxes that you don’t use.”

I guess the materials aren't expensive?

It's pretty surprising. Surely they could've fit it into the same footprint as one of my all-time favorite Watch box designs:

Yes, I was struck by the size and weight of the box my stainless steel watch came in. It's about the size of a traditional watch box, and inside it is a plastic case with the watch and cable. Granted, it is less expensive material, and I'm guessing there is a lot of recycled content.

I think the Sport box is ridiculous, personally. I understand that Apple wants to distinguish the Sport from the Watch, but I'm not sure this was the way to do it.
