I bought my 21 Year Old Daughter an IPhone X for “Christmas”, but got a launch day phone (not my intention but everyone was saying how if you didn’t order immediately you couldn't get one until next year and she would have been mad) so I had to send it to her overnight to California so she could activate it. Even though I had texted her to backup her iPhone and install IOS 11.1, she hadn’t done either one before the phone arrived at 10 AM today. Her iPhone 6 was still on iOS 9! She ended up having to use iTunes - Yikes! Then again I guess cleaner files. She hadn’t even heard of animojiis. She told me to text her a description of what they were. She asked me if there was a wireless charger in the box. I told her - no - that is extra and if she wants - I will get her one for Christmas ( Because as all parents know, when the Christmas Present is given early, EVEN if it is a $1000 Plus $92.00 tax IPhone X, another present is expected as well as a well stuffed stocking and the plane ticket to come home). So I feel a bit sad that she doesn’t even know how wonderful her new phone is . All she has done so far is complain about how hard it was to set up. My iPhone 8 Plus was pretty Much Charge and set next to my 5s. Easiest upgrade ever.

How about people are less quick to jump to conclusions? Maybe she is simply less active in keeping up on tech news etc. This isn’t everybody’s cup of tea.

Perhaps it would have been better to get her to send you a SIM card and you set it up in advance?

Not jumping to conclusions. Reply was based on what mom wrote. Nowhere did mom state her daughter thanked her, was excited she got the phone, or any other positive adjective.

If all she has done is complain about how hard it is to set up, she needs some lessons on manners and respect.
Not really. If she used iTunes, the complaints are probably justified. Can't wait to never have to touch iTunes for the purpose of iOS device management ever again (and I actually like using the app for everything else).

Sorry not meant to point at anyone specifically. The posts don’t say she didn’t thank her - that information was just left out because it was talking about problems getting set up etc

21yo and YOU bought the phone? And all she did was complain and you are still willing to buy her more?

Not to defend the girl but i am a jack of all trade Senior Systems Admin at work. There are users who are comfortable with less technology regardless of age. This girl is flat out no interest in technology and I think the dad expects the daughter to be as tech savvy as he is. Perhaps she was just frustrated and ended in complaint even its the easiest thing to do on earth? I have 20 years experience of dealing with clients and internal users who just want you to leave it as is. Trust me, I get really frustrated with them sometimes but some people aren't just like that.

I am an android users for many years and dealing with Android is the most annoying thing whenever I switched from one Android device to another....

2 years ago, i got an iPhone 6s and never looked back. I'm getting iPhone 8 in two weeks. I like my touchID.

Sorry to hear that but it seemed like your child has no interest in technology. Just want to use the tool. She probably appreciate the phone itself but didn't want to deal with the other stuff like backup, etc.

I get this with my wife all the time and acting as her real time technical support.

I have a daughter the same age with an iPhone 6. She too has no interest in the iPhone X. Probably down to her current i6 being fully paid for and still working perfectly. That, and not worth the hassle of finding new cases, headphones, car adapters, etc.

So, yeah, it’s a sobering insight into life outside the iPhone infatuation bubble. I think I’m starting to drift that way myself. I stopped at an Apple store yesterday and spent 15 minutes playing with a demo phone. The X is really nice, but not ‘revolutionary’ enough to make me spend 1.4k to replace my perfect 256GB i7.

Most people who do not follow technology don't know all the features of the iPhone. It's common. Users here need to realize we are in a very small minority. 99.9% of users are not like us who follow technology/Apple everyday.

Would you like to adopt me? Sure I’m 42 and married, but can you ever have too many kids :p

Yeah.... this was what I was thinking but didn’t have the gumption to write.

I’d be SO thankful if my parents bought my phone for me. I always try to think about how many hours my Mom and Dad had to work essentially at zero benefit to themselves to give me a $1200 phone. Would be unbelievably grateful and have almost unlimited patience in getting it set up; on top of knowing how hard they are to get at the moment.

Anyways, I do hope she enjoys it once she gets it set up. Mines been an absolute pleasure to have! Cheers!

Yeah - I think that is the deal. I really think I was more excited about the phone than she was. I even tracked the truck on UPS waiting for it’s arrival. I am more interested in tech than she is, even if I am 55. She did send me some cute animojis last night. I don’t think she realizes that they include sound.

I had to use iTunes to wipe my original iPhone before I sold it to a collector last month and Yikes I forgot how user unfriendly it is!

I am sadly still in the bubble! Now wishing I had an X instead of my 8 Plus!

I do have to give my daughter props for sticking with getting the phone set up on what is her only day off of the week. I think she will end up loving it, if anything for the incredible front facing camera for selfies.

What got me was the ‘she’d be mad’ part if OP missed the initial round of orders and couldn’t get it in time for Christmas o_O

I’m about the same age as OPs daughter and, tbh animojis seem like one of those really cringe things that the sort of 50 year old guys who run Apple think would be ‘cool’ to us lol ;) it’s like wireless everything, the novelty is not there with our generation, it’s more of a pain to have to keep things charged than a ‘wow I can have ear pods that connect wirelessly’... mind the (generational) gap I guess!

Yep, like the 50 Year Old guys who run Apple, I would have thought that my 21 Year Old would have thought the Animojis were cool. I really don’t even think my daughter had a clue that it would be hard to get an iPhone X. She doesn’t handle disappointment well, so that’s why I assumed she would be upset if she didn’t have it by Christmas. She is an only child and an only grandchild. So to say she is spoiled would be an understatement.

Having two teenage daughters of my own, that story completely resonates...!
At least it does get a little better when they become “adults” and start having to pay most of their own bills! I DO hear Thank You more often than I used to. Then again - some of the decisions they make - Yikes! I gave my daughter my super cute alien green Kia Soul Exclaim and she traded it in on a lease for a new Mazda 6. At least she pays her own car insurance now (which costs a small fortune in San Diego). I do look forward to the day I am no longer paying for her cell phone bill. I don’t need 16G of data, but she does!
