So, my contract ends in August 2011 but AT&T said I can get an upgrade...

...I'm not even one year through my 2 year contract, but when i texted that number they said i was eligible for an upgrade! i'm shocked...why is this? was it a mistake? or something else?
 
it says word for word, "as a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2 year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee." is this what you mean?

I have a friend 3 months into her contract and is eligible. Wonder how AT&T is determining? It's great that they're hooking people up. Still only 1 of my lines is eligible. I'll check every couple days until the 15th.

Assuming you pay a lot for your primary line. You should be eligible for an upgrade every 12 months into a 24 month contract.

So you last used an upgrade in August 2009? That means your next upgrade on a 12 month cycle would have been August 2010. And now Steve Jobs has confirmed that AT&T has allowed people to move up their eligibility date 6 months.

Your eligibility got moved up 6 months.
 
Upgrade

I called my local Apple store (where I got my 3GS) and they said I was eligible for a full upgrade right away. I got my 3GS on June 21st. Lucky I guess...

This is what I got and I'm only 6 months into my contract

"A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on 08/30/2011. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price with a 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please visit a participating iPhone sales location for pricing on this offer"

I wonder how much they would charge me for the iphone, and if it means losing my unlimited data plan by signing a new 2yr contract, then I'd rather pay full retail price.
 
WOW, i guess i did get lucky. how the heck did this come about? i don't pay exorbitantly at all-i just have one 39.99 voice plan with the data and 1500 texts. i guess i cant complain, but any more information about this wonderful situation would be great.

So I too appear to be eligible for the $199/$299 price, from what I can deduce, despite the fact that I bought the 3GS on launch day last year, and my contract ends in June 2011. However, up until a few weeks ago, I was upgrade eligible in November, so if they move that up six months, it makes sense that I would now be eligible.

But I can't help feeling like it IS a trap. See, Verizon has great service by me, and AT&T doesn't. As a matter of fact, I was just fighting with AT&T a couple days ago over the coverage in my area getting worse, due to a tower that was removed. A Verizon iPhone would be heaven for me, as I could actually USE the thing. But the discounted pricing on this new phone, which is AWESOME, is SO very tempting. I'm sure I could sell my 3GS on ebay and get a good chunk of that $199 back. But that $325 early termination fee should the iPhone come to Verizon...yikes. I can't decide what to do.

I guess I'll wait until preorders start on June 15 to confirm that I actually am eligible for the full discount, and then I'll worry about the rest of it. Meanwhile, I'll be watching the value of the 3GS' on eBay.

Right, I'll be doing the same. However, I can't help but be genuinely curious why I was one of the chosen ones to receive the upgrade! I mean, I'm not complaining by any means (actually, I'm ecstatic :) ) but am curious. I have a cheap phone plan, and my contract is up in over a year. Why is it that people that are paying more per month and have less on their contract can not get out of their contract? Thanks, though, AT&T!

I received the same message. Does anyone know how much it will cost me to upgrade to the 16GB iPhone 4?

A month ago when I texted in to see if I would be eligible, the message back said I wouldn't be eligible until November 2010. I've been a long time customer. Also bought 2G on day one, 3G on day one, and 3GS maybe a month after launch.

Today when I checked, I got the same message above so they moved my upgrade eligibility up 5 months!

What's weird is my primary phone line is no longer under contract anymore. My secondary line is another iPhone that belongs to my brother. He got his a week after the 3GS came out. However his is showing 2/2011.

Makes no sense. Especially from the posts I am reading here. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to what AT&T is doing as far as upgrades go. :(
 
Preorders aren't until the 15th. Give them time, I bet they catch everyone up. I'm pretty excited. Looks like I'll have a new iPhone 4 after all.
 
Same here. I started my contract in August 2009. And when I text "*639#" I get this:
