The teaser had led many to believe astrophotography to be one of the new features, but apparently not. It's for the satelite SOS. Seems like a missed opportunity, especially if Apple wanted to brag about the new higher megapixel count.
Not explicitly but I'm curious about the "better low light performance" is also a code word for improved astrophotography. People are already taking okay-ish photos of the stars with the 13 Pro so maybe astrophotography will be feasible unofficially (so long as you at least attempt to reduce light pollution)?
I take a lot of astrophotography with my 13 pro max and I posted a question about night mode performance. I hope the iPhone 14 pro/ pro max has a setting like Samsung has on their phones, the ability to set a 30” exposure at a preferred ISO. We shall see I suppose. The slower optics will hopefully reduce vignetting and deliver sharper corner details, but I also am surprised no night shots were mentioned on the Apple event. They seemed to have rushed through the event & quickly covering the items. My iPhone 13 pro max f/1.5 optics cause quite a bit of vignetting when shooting the night sky that I have to remove in post, so hopefully the new camera on the iPhone 14 Pro max will be better… otherwise I’ll have to just stick with using my iPhone 13 pro max along side the 14 pro max for astronomy. Here are a few samples
Unless there's excellent telephoto, like what we saw with Huawei P30 Pro a few years ago, I don't think astrophotography is in the cards for Apple yet.
