Hi Guys,

I need some advice and suggestion. I am in a dilemma. I was out and about to buy an External Monitor to hook it up with my 11" iPad Pro. Now I wanted to have an external Monitor in the form of Bigger Display mostly to watch YouTube and Movies on it from my iPad Pro which is through Netflix, Apple TV/iTunes. Amazon Prime Videos etc...

Now the thing is, in iPad OS 14 Apple is bringing support to the VP9 Codec that Google uses for YouTube meaning now even iPad Pro can play Videos higher than 1080P which is the current Max resolution supported by iPads right ?

I am in a Fix now, which Monitor should I buy I was about to buy only a 1080P monitor but after hearing this news I am thinking now which one to buy. But even if YouTube starts playing videos higher than 1080P, if My Main use is to watch Movies, except for Netflix no one supports Resolution more than 1080P. Apple Does not so does not Amazon Prime. With Netflix I am not on their Higher Tier which is the 4K Package. Sure I can go for it. But the other problem is I am not on a very high budget so with such a shoe string budget the Choice of Monitors which are atleast 2K is not all that good Thick Bezels, Plastic Body, not adjustable stand, cannot swivel...etc...etc...But If I bring down my requirement to 1080P then I have many choice in my budget. For e.g. LG has some very good Extremely Thin Bezels Monitor. But is only a 1080P monitor.

So guys what do you suggest considering my use case of occasionally being able to stream 4K videos should I save the money for future and go for a better looking Model in terms of performance and everything else then. Or should I just right now buy the 4K but a very basic Monitor. I am confused.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks in Advance !

Yes, that's correct.

This won’t answer your question necessarily but my initial thoughts upon reading your post were:

1. You open with streaming being your primary impetus but close saying that the use case will be occasional, which is it and what are your other current options for watching content (do you have televisions already)?

2. In part you’re waiting for additional features to land on iOS so using the time to save up for a better monitor would seem like the more prudent thing to do than to compromise on the quality of monitor. On the non-streaming side we’re all waiting for better external monitor support so if a monitor purchase isn’t currently necessary for uses other than streaming then waiting for that support seems like a good idea.

3. If streaming is the primary use case then to me a TV with a streaming device (Roku, AppleTV, Fire Stick etc.) is a better option. That’s just me though - I’d rather have the streaming device dedicated for that task and then cast to it if I feel like it or run it independent of my mobile devices otherwise.

Yes but I watch TV separately and I watch Content on Computers/Tablets/Phones separately and I would say I find it most convenient and the choice is more if I watch it online on any of the above three devices. Also to mention that I do not have a Modern TV which has Internet on it can stream Movies. So Watching Streaming Content/Movies on TV is out of question as I will have to altogether buy a new TV.

Yes and No. What I am saying is, Other than YouTube nothing will offer me free 4K Streaming I can do it on Netflix but I have to have the Netflix 4K Subscription which I do not plan to have forever. Once in a Blue Moon for a Month is fine but not like forever, It is expensive :) So None of the other Streaming Websites will give 4K streaming except YouTube and Netflix(If I buy the 4K Subscription) so does it make sense in buying a High end premium 2K or a 4K Monitor. That too by being on a shoe string budget the choice of Monitors in 2K are ugly. e.g this one

But with Monitors I can also use it to Surf the Internet, Browse through Photos on the iPad Pro and a lot things. That cannot happen on a TV right ? I am also gonna surf the web from on the Monitor. Can it happen on a TV ? I am not sure.

Don't know what your budget is, but on the 4K monitor side I recently got this 4K LG for $300 and am really happy with it -

If I want, in lieu of the iPad or laptop that is usually connected to it, I can plug my Amazon Fire stick into the HDMI port and use it to stream.

Yup that’s why I asked about priorities and availability of a TV.

When you say your TV isn’t modern, how old is it? if there’s an available HDMI port on it and you have wifi in your home then that’s all you really need for streaming and a $30 Roku streaming stick will get you there. You could at least then wait for better monitor support before a purchase of a nice monitor.

You mean Directly connect the Amazon Fire Stick in the HDMI port of the Monitor ?

Yes, that's the model I have and I can plug the Fire Stick into an HDMI port of the monitor. It has 2 HDMI and 1 DisplayPort.

Nice @sparksd . At the start of local stay at home orders here I picked up a 32" 4k monitor from a local Costco for $380. I didn't have much of a choice, all other stores on the island (Oahu, Hawaii) were completely out of stock of monitors larger than 24". I wish mine had dual HDMI. I ended up picking up an HDMI switch for the monitor to eliminate the need to swap cables between my windows laptop and nvidia shield tv (the monitor did come with two inputs but one was display port and I have my reasons for not going that route). Having the multiple inputs is definitely a good feature to look for.

By the way - what are people's thoughts on 4k monitors vs 4k TV's used as monitors. Just curious and I think it might help OP out too perhaps. Given that OP will use the monitor with the iPad which will eventually get better external monitor support I think they're on the right track sticking with the monitor side. The downside is cost of 4k monitors is higher than say a 4k TV.

Just downloaded the beta and yes on the YouTube app 4k HDR Videos playback at 4K 60fps

A while back our old TV died and I got this mid-priced 55" Samsung 4K set -

Granted, it's larger, etc. but the picture quality is significantly better than my lower-end 4K monitor and it's a smart TV with streaming apps built in and they work extremely well. It does upscaling quite well, too - I have a 4K DVD player but use the TV's upscaling for non-4K discs as it is better. In the end, I'd rather put the money into the 4K TV over the monitor - I think there's more bang for the buck there.
