Common misconception. There is nothing wrong with "censorship" on private property. Letting ignoramuses pontificate on matters they know nothing about and allowing the riffraff to spew their pablum (and often hatred) in most vulgar terms doesn't fly in my house. Nor should it here.

Also, your avatar picture is offensive -- but I suspect you know that already.
Well said.

Am in complete agreement with you.

And bonus points for the (correct) use of pablum.

I realise that I have come to far prefer excessive moderation (or control, or regulation) to no moderation, or regulation.

Couldn't disagree more strongly, but to each our own.

I'd also disagree with your commingling of "moderation", "control", "regulation" and "censorship"

Those are all quite different things with wildly different implications.

And, yes, to my mind, some things ought to be censored, irrespective of commercial imperatives, or popular demand.

Yes, but for me the list extremely small.

I'm not interested in living in a dictatorship, especially one looking to control speech and ultimately thought.

Wars were fought -- new countries even created -- to get away from that.

Complaining on here isn't going to change anything. Vote with your wallet/feet. Stop participating in the forum if it doesn't align with your values. You can save yourself a lot of of grief when you realize you can't change others, you can only control how you respond to them.

Also on the topic of "censorship." Forums like this should absolutely be censored for one simple reason: there is no real-world consequence to spouting nonsense and misinformation. Rights go hand-in-hand with responsibility. You can have whatever terrible opinion you want. You won't go to jail for it. Your post might get deleted. If you can't live with that you probably shouldn't be participating in public discourse. Freedom from consequences is the main reason why the world is in the sorry state it is in now and basically all of social media is an unusable hellscape.

Complaints of uneven/biased or inconsistent moderation pop up with surprising regularity. Now I'm not saying that is evidence of impropriety but its clear that regardless of what people say, for and against the topic, nothing has changed.

Its probably less that the staff is unwilling to make changes, and more that a forum of this size, is going to incur such accusations regardless of the safeguards in place. Its the old you can't please everyone all of the time.
