It isn't even 15 minutes though, and it is no more difficult than unscrewing a screw and placing a cartridge into an Atari / Sega Genesis / Nintendo 64 (depending on your age).
It is really cake and no one should pay anyone to do it for them, or Apple's markup.

i must be pretty old, i remember all of those systems : (

does a MBP take MB ram? I am thinking about getting 2x2gb from one of the mentioned sites, 2gb in the MB and 2gb in the MBP (current)

The new MB/MBP models may take different memory. We don't know yet.

Some of us are taking a chance by ordering ahead of time so we have the memory at launch at a lower price from an internet retailer, but it might turn out that we need to return it due to DDR3 memory being used.

I know I'll be returning my 2x2GB if the new MBP can use 8GB of ram. :D

i did a biopsy of the MBP, and it seems the ram slots are full with 1gb chips. I was thinking that the 2gb was built in (like my ibook that had xRam and a slot for more) so with the macbook i guess it would have 2x1gb OTB? so i would need to buy two 2GB bits or ram to get 4gb?

(forgive me :D im not that good at this part of the macworld, im more iPod/iPhone savvy)

edited my cretinism out :D

There are 2 slots for RAM. So..... you would need 2 x 2GB for 4GB of RAM. :p

A good place to buy RAM in person, and quite cheap, are the computer markets in ACT/NSW. Another one all NSW I think there are also others..... in Brisbane.
If you live in the area then I suggest you go to one of them to get the RAM..... :)

Or you could just go to Crucial (Australia)..... :D

So if I get a Macbook with 1 GB RAM I could buy 2 sets of 2GB of ram and just replace them (new to mac...be easy). Or is it better to just get a 2GB RAM and keep the OEM 1GB RAM?

Yes, buy 2 x 2GB.....

If you want 4GB RAM get 2 x 2GB :D
If you want 2GB RAM get 2 x 1GB

You want to have two identical models in both slots......

I bought the Apple RAM for my iMac this past summer. It was $180 (educational discount) when Crucial was quoting me $139.99, plus shipping that I was already paying on the iMac.

Yes, I still could have saved $30-40 dollars going with Crucial, but the way I saw it the RAM is covered under the same warranty as the iMac, and I didn't have to muck around inside it. (One of the reasons I switched - I got tired of cracking cases open every month or two to "fix" this or "replace" that.)

In the end, just go with whatever works for you - looks like right now you can get 3rd party RAM for about 1/3 the price of Apple if you DIY. If that's worth your time and effort, then by all means go ahead. The important thing is to make an informed decision for yourself.

Echo: ("the price");

Buying 4GB from Apple is like buying an 1 year warranty with 90 days free from a high end shop for $200.

And you still have to get Apple Care if you want to extend that warranty and support.

If you go for the Fry's value 4GB RAM for $25 after Rebate, you might get a 90 day warranty -- and have to wait for your $40 to arrive in the mail.

Spend $70 dollars and you likely get lifetime warranty with no Rebate hassles, with a company that guarantees it to work in the Mac, though you have to go through a few more hoops to get it replaced.

apple ram is expensive. the only "pro" to buying apple ram is that it is guaranteed to run on your computer and is under apple warranty.

why do you hear people saying to buy third party ram? because it is cheaper. just make sure the ram states that it is compatable with Mac and you're good to go. next, make sure they have a decent warranty. most companies have at least a few year or lifetime warranty. with this in mind, it weighs out the statement that apple ram is covered by apple. with third party covering a lifetime warranty, you're all set.
