This will be my first iMac btw...

I have 16 gb of ram which arrived yesterday...how long to wait before installing it? I feel like I should run it for a while but how long to be sure things are fine? Thanks in advance!!

You can install it at any time. I would boot up first and set up your Mac with the original RAM. Then shut down, install the RAM, and restart.
