Hi there,

switched from Tiger to Leopard on my Quad G5. I used to edit the AppleFan.kext in Tiger to really kept the fans way more silent.

Now in Leopard, I think, there is no such file as AppleFan.kext. At least not in the same way.

Is there no tool available that runs under Leopard and lets me choose threshold temps and RPM?

thx,
Markus

For a G5? No.

There is G4FanControl, but:

- It is no longer updated

- The dev does not respond to communication

- It works only on G4s and only on specific models of G4s. It's a crapshoot if it will work on the G4 you use it on.

- You're asking about a G5

I stand corrected, I had forgotten that it wasn't available on PPC systems, I run it on my 17" MBP on Tiger so just assumed incorrectly that it was available for the PPCs too.

It seems to work on every G4 PowerBook I’ve tried it on.

That was awhile ago, and I haven’t messed around with G4fancontrol lately except yesterday on my 17”.
I suppose it only works on AlBooks.

So let me rephrase: It works on every Aluminum PowerBook I’ve tried it on.
This includes a 1.5Ghz 12”, a 15” 1.5Ghz, a 17” 1.5Ghz, and a 17” 1.67Ghz (this powerbook is literally just an open bottom case that came with my 1.5Ghz 17, I plugged all the cables in and hooked it up to a display to see if it worked. It does, and I used G4fancontrol to see if the fans worked. They do, and the app worked).

Being as AlBooks have a totally redesigned cooling system from TiBooks, and all the towers only have one case fan (excluding the the weird little CPU fan on DAs and QSs) it makes sense that the app was probably only developed to be used on AlBooks.

Edit: I’ve just read the other two links below the post that was mine.
It worked on my two 17” PB’s, so IDK.

All I can say is that I have tried it multiple times over the years on a 1Ghz AlBook 17" and a 1.67Ghz 17" HD-DLSD and I have never once gotten it to work.

It occurs to me now that maybe iStat Menus might have something to do with that, but IDK. In any case, whenever I asked the dev, I was ignored. Since my PB wasn't cooking like Intel Macs do I just moved on from it.

My 1.67s are all not DLSD’s unfortunately. Maybe they don’twork on those ones.
I don’t have a 1GHz aluminum but I do have an 867Mhz 12” I can try.
