Definitely take your printer and scanner. There are times when the demand for the Uni's own printers are so high you'll end up hanging around for an hour waiting for your print job to appear. There'll also be times when you'll find a table or diagram in a paper or book that would be perfect to illustrate a point in your own work. Much easier to scan & attach than to recreate.

Don't worry about the CDs though. God, students today have it so easy. I think of the amount of stuff I used to have to lug around. Stereo tower thing (with turntable), computer base and CRT monitor, TV, music collection. All now replaced with an iMac :)

Also, I'm taking my camera, ipod and my extrnal hd - but not my printer and scanner, good idea?

Well i'm not taking my CD collection! Just my powerbook and an external hardrive backup. I guess it depends on how much space you have and whether you will use the CD's instead of your mp3/aac etc...

Im taking a printer just for the convenience, but i guess that is again down to space etc!

I agree with dynamicv — printer and scanner are definitely essential, if only for getting things done at 3am that are due in at 9am. :p

I wouldn't bother with the CDs/DVDs myself if they're in iTunes. You can always bring them later if you change your mind.

Edit: dynamicv, I just saw your edit. I took hundreds of tapes to uni. :p

Oh yes. You tell yourself you're not going to be like that, then someone drags you out to the pub the night before the coursework is due and before you know it, you're sat in front of Microsoft Word at 4am and knocking back ProPlus :D

Nah. Why bother? If it's all on your iPod anyway, it's more to carry, more to lose and "lend" to people. You'll be glad at the end of term when you have not much stuff.

Camera - if you like taking pics, then yes. I went to uni before digicams really took off, and I missed lots of memories because I din't have a camera. Just don't turn up with a fancy dSLR, or you'll be instantly known as a geek.

iPod - of course! External HD - yes, for backing up all those essays and coursework you really don't want to lose. Scanner/printer - I wouldn't bother, normally there is a good network printer you can use. But useful if you're in a rush to hand our work in. Scanner - my guess is you'll never use it.

Totally. :D

And most uni's printer networks are dire. There's nothing worse than knowing a deadline is ticking away, and the network's down, or it's just not coming out for no reason, they're not answering the helpline phone and you're just in a blind panic because you've done the bastard work, but because of their crappy system, you're going to miss the hand in time. And they won't have any sympathy, and they will give you a 40% grade if you hand it in late. All that could be avoided if you had your own printer, because you can always print something out. I say the printer's much more important than the scanner. If it's really that big, I would avoid taking something else large if it meant you could have the printer with you. Even if it saves your arse once, it's worth it. Seriously.

I'd take the printer if I were you. The printer costs at my Uni were quite ridiculous and walking all the way down the 150m slope to the nearest IT centre was wayyyy too much work. Its definitely useful in a pinch. Also bring a screwdriver set and a bottle of Sambuka. Worked for me!!

BTW, which Uni are you going to and what course are you studying?

Gray's Art School up in Aberdeen, I'm doing Graphic Design...

Definitely take the printer then. You'll be needing to print out loads of stuff, and the uni ones won't always work, I guarantee it.

These have been pretty good tips so far!

Here's a couple regarding the frosh week line-ups, so you can do better things than stand in line.
1) Get in line for your student id as early as possible. The lineups are always long and move slowly.

2)Line ups for books can be avoided by going either very early in the day or very late, but you should avoid the first and the last day of frosh week (they are always packed those days).

... if you're stuck in the line (like I was) you might as well chat with your neighbours, I did and I still keep in touch with one of them to this day! :)

Why do you need a printer, when the felt tip is the current too cool for school style??? ;) :p

5 boxes of clothes/food/drink/coathangers/printer/books/clothes
2 boxes of plates (our old ones - my mum just gave me all 24 pieces >_>)
Shoe box full of pens/craftknifes/etc
2 suitcases of shoes/bedding/pillows/coathangers (again)
Rucksack (not shown) with toiletries and anything else I find too put in in the next 24 hours

Should I take my BMX? My actual Uni is about 20-30 minutes walk away from my halls so it'd help in that respect, plus being a BMX means I can throw it in my room and it'll fit happily. The con to this is that bikes aren't covered on insurance and are very easy to nick.

Oh God! I have the exact same brown suitcase which I took to my first uni when I was 18! Must be a Scottish thing...

I also have lots of those archive boxes.

As for the bike, take it and get a lock or two.

Haha, it was a wedding present to my Mum and Dad 25 years ago >_> We have other suitcases/bags but I love that one. I'm not trying to be retro cool or anything though.

And yeah, I have a few locks lying about that'll go on my bike.

I just sent off my Passport Cleaning thing to Salford. It's been such a mess trying to get into my 3rd year at a different university from before. Ah well. Doing Design Futures, Ba. Studied on Design and Art Direction at Manchester previously, and Multimedia Design at Tameside.

I should probably get out of education and start work soon :D

Any tips? God I've got nothing useful to give. I spent freshers week canoodling my girlfriend :D drinking's not my cup of tea.
