So was today's 2.0 the incorrect version?

Engadget's speculating that the 2.0 version released today was really meant for 3G iPhones (hence all the shoddy performance people are experiencing). Anymore word on this?

Maybe I just have lower expectations, but the performance I have seen has been flawless.

It's not crashing, the apps are fairly snappy, all good from here.

Yeah all is good from my 2.0 experience on my EDGE phone, except the backing-up at the beginning of syncing.

yea, same here, it's flawless! Very impressed with all the apps (some are realllllllly useful!) so far.
Oh yea, except that back up thing, too.

I doubt it as the 3G iPhone's have a different build number(5A345 I believe) then the one that was found( 5A347). It is a bit laggy at times, but overall it has been smooth.

Not really sure... if it's the case, how hard would it be to load the "official" software? I imagine you would have to downgrade to 1.1.4 first though, which could be a pain.

I'm beginning to think it is the incorrect version. I'm getting a ton of lag, and the black dot where Edge should be. Also, I think the file name shows it's incorrect. Filename starts 1,2, whereas all the other firmware updates were 1,1.

Major/Minor hardware version.

4/8/16GB iPhones were 1,1
New 3G iPhones must be 1,2

Same numbering scheme for all Apple Hardware, iMac, Macbook, etc.

I'm running 2.0 and it's been flawless thus far. I've downloaded several (free) apps and they've all worked fine. I'll still probably restore the released version when it does become available though.

So when the official 2.0 goes live, will it just automatically detect that it's different or will we have to restore the phone and start from scratch?

Just posted this somewhere else, but found it relevant in supporting Engadget.

Please! I need some quick confirmation. In 1.1.4 did anyone's screen begin to flicker???!!!?? As in slightly dim and slightly brighten when you turn the brightness down? I am running 2.0 now and never saw this in 1.1.4. Noticed this when I was in a low lit room and my iPhones screen auto dimmed. I then went into Setting and turned the brightness further down only to see it shutter more! When the brightness was increased the problem was gone! Help? Is there something wrong with my iPhone?

Started downloading, and stopped in the middle.

What was I thinking downloading something that is coming with the phone Im buying tomorrow?

there's no way you'd have to downgrade to 1.1.4 to update to a later build of 2.0.

if you are dying to see 2.0, there's no reason not to upgrade now. this build is working great. only snag i've encountered is with the contacts search, otherwise flawless.

If this version wasn't meant for the first gen iPhone, how come there is no option to turn off 3G?

Pretty sure the screen flicker was your phone calibrating itself for the single ambient light sensor, instead of the 2 in the 2nd gen phone.

Good call. I'm not too worried as I sound in the first post. It's those little things I suppose will work themselves out. I was really surprised that 2.0 recognized which iPhone I had and everything seamlessly! That's Apple for you.

and there is no mention of GPS anywhere on the phone...

Actually, I think the 3Gs are 2,2 where as the first iPhones were 1,1 (for 1.x firmware versions) or 1,2 (for version 2.0).
