No MMS
No Video
No Voice Recognition
No compass function

SO we get Copy and paste and the ability to spend more in the app store? Am I forgetting anything? We better be able to use the Tom Tom App and cradle or I'm gonna be pissed.

Copy and Paste
Landscape mode for Mail and Notes.

SO 3.0 is a bust for us stuck with a 3G unless we spend $300-$600?

Not at launch, Not until several months after the release date.

Actually you can use MMS now, you just need to call an AT&T CSR and have the MMS Opt Out removed from your account.

AT&T just wants to wait to do it in one fell swoop. What they should do is change the authoring permissions on the Opt Out that would allow each user to log into their AT&T account and remove the restriction. It would save everyone time and AT&T especially - money!

Yes the permissions can be changed for all iPhone accounts in about 5 - 10 mins this way *IF* AT&T wanted to.

It won't be available at launch for the 3GS either.

Anyway that is an AT&T restriction, not an Apple one.

I don't care who's fault it is, it's dumb. Are there any cool functions I missed that will work with the 3G?

Oh wait the landscape mode for mail and notes right? Anything else?

How did you know that it was the only restriction since the functionality isn't available till 3.0? Just curious.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A312g Safari/528.16)

Copy and paste rules.
Mms is great. Can't remember the other 98 improvements. !!!

But you are making it sound like only the 3GS can do MMS in your original post.

Then you spin it to talk about the date.

Bottom line:

3GS Has these things that the iPhone 3G does not:

1) "Twice as fast by magic" whatever the $%^&YU* that means.

2) Video Recording

3) Compass

4) Voice Commands

5) 1 more MP on the Camera and Auto Focus

6) Slightly better Battery Life

That's it.

Those are the only 6 advantages to getting the new phone.

will the Tom Tom app work with no compass? does it use the compass too? When is that app going to be released and the windshield cradle?

quite honestly the 3gs doesnt have enough substance to warrant more money from me, as for 3.0, im perfectly with my phone the way it is with 2.x so 3.0 can only make it better. im really looking forward to landscape across the board.

Doesn't need a compass. The little TomTom devices don't even have (or had, maybe they do these days) a compass and they still work flawlessly.

Nope, the turn-by-turn relies on movement to determine which direction you are going, so it should work on the 3G just fine. I can't wait for more details about this.

apple can rotate the google maps without compass, the thing is that we have to walk fast or get in a car in order to do the proper calculation. meanwhile is not smooth as the compass.
so technically any driving software will work with 3g

Wonder why the voice features won't work on the 3G? I would've thought that's a software only thing....
It is a software thing.

But they are going to lock it out on the 3G, just like video recording, in order to try to entice some upgrades.

Because if they wanted to, they could let the 3G record video, just at the substandard quality that the current 3G hardware supports.

But they aren't.

Ahh...thanks.

I guess overall, I'm underwhelmed by the iphone update. Good stuff for sure, but not as earth shattering as I've come to expect. They did set the bar pretty high with the last 2 phones.....

The mbp announcements were nice, as well as snow leopard.

I can't wait for the Tom Tom, that should be nice. Any guesses how much that app will cost?

TomTom has made navigation available for your iPhone 3G. All you need is:

the TomTom app including the latest maps
(coming soon to the iTunes App Store)

the TomTom car kit that offers secure docking, enhanced GPS performance, clear voice instructions and hands-free calling, while charging your iPhone at the same time.
