I don't know what Apple stores are near you but I could always get the 16GB/1TB in stock in my area stores.
It greatly varies depending on the country and how large the demand/user base is. Where I live, I could find only base 8GB/256GB and 8GB/512GB options at the store as well. For anything else, you had to lace an order.

So I have an M2 MBA and it has been pretty much the perfect laptop for what I use it for. I really don't have huge list of things I would like to have upgraded. People go on and on about the screen. If you get a Pro model you get mini led. Great now I have blooming because it is still an issue with mini led. Micro Led would be perfect and might even be better than OLED since you don't have burn in issues but mini led just isn't there in my personal opinion. I actually prefer IPS but what I would really like is better overall consistency in the screen, 120hz/90hz refresh rate and a higher contrast ratio. Those improvements would really be all I want. M3 over M2. M3 is a decent upgrade but is it enough of a boost to upgrade to an otherwise identical machine??

What I am seriously considering though is the M3 15" MBA. This would probably be my dream machine. BUT I don't know as the 13.6" is the perfect medium between screen size and maximum portability which is one of the things I love so much about the air. But if the weight distribution is the same as the 13" it should feel the same just a little bigger. But the 13.6" is pretty much at the perfect overall weight. Any more and it is too heavy and any less and it is too flimsy.

So what model air do you have? What do you like about and what would you like to see improved?

If you have an air are you thinking of upgrading to another air? How many current air owners would be tempted by a 14" MBP with a regular M3?? Why? What about pricing? Does it make more sense to get a Pro and why? Does it make more sense to get an Air and why?
Love my Air 2 15; for me its the perfect computer and balances size and functionality well (other devices I have to compare; a 16" M1 Max, 13in M1 Air; a slew of iPad pros with magic keyboards)

Very happy with my M1 Air/16GB/500GB. Best laptop I've ever owned. Still like the wedge shaped notchless design better than the newer models. Only thing is that the battery is showing its age after 2,5 years. Around 78% left after 499 cycles, according to Coconutbattery. It gets me through the day, but it used to last almost 2 days. Replacing the battery would probably be a wortwhile investment.

I have an M1 MBA and a M2 MBA 15". I prefer the keyboard on the M1 MBA compared to the M2 MBA 15", but both are good devices. Not happy with the 15" in Midnight though. Doesn't look as premium as the M1 imo.

Wait you just walked in and you were able to bring it home with you, never needed to order online?
16/1 is the secret ”specced out stock” model for the air m2. It’s easy enough to see whether your local Apple Store has them in the online store by selecting that particular configuration, selecting in store pickup, and looking at the pickup date. (You may also have to fiddle with the charger choice; I believe specced out stock model comes with the double charger). May not be available in all colors either.

I ordered online but picked it up in the store the same day. They commonly have 16/1tb models of the MBA and MBP in stock. I live in Boston and have 4 Apple stores within 30 minutes.

No, it's the standard charger and I tend to think all colors are available as I got Starlight on the same day I ordered. But yes you are correct. That is the way to do it.

Rocking the M1 Air,

I got 8 GB of Ram because you could not get Apple Silicon and 16 GB at the same time just by walking in the Apple Store when I desperately needed a new laptop (which is absolutely dog water that you cant do it with a MBA today)
100% Agreed. Apple usually only stocks the base config (8/256), 8/512GB, and then a maxed out config which is the 16/1TB for $$$$$. For the M1 Air they only sell base config in store.

You're already forced to upgrade to the 8 core, 10 core GPU version if you want 512GB in store, and then if you want 16GB you have to shell out for the 1TB version which for that price should MEAN maxed out, 24GB/1TB. Apple's pushing too hard there IMO, they should just offer a base, base with 16GB, 8/10 16GB 512GB, and then a maxed out. If it's about stock space, they obviously know what sells more so they could stock 4 configs and track what sells more and adjust accordingly.

And 8 GB of ram is showing itself now,
And I need more.

8GB RAM in 2023 is pathetic, but it's the same old story and all manufactures get away with it, even Microsoft with their Surface lineup, and Dell, Lenovo. I currently have Scrivener open, Mail (no emails open), iMessage, and Safari with 12 tabs open; most of them are threads from here that as I read I close, and then a Google Sheets tab. Barely asking anything from this laptop and memory pressure is about to touch red.

It's ridiculous that you can't walk into Apple and buy a MacBook Air with 16GB without having to buy the maxed out version for over $2K. If you just need a base but would like the 16GB RAM, you're forced to order online and wait a few weeks, which for some people equates to downtime.

My local stores carry the 16/1TB 15" in Space Gray and Midnight. Other colors/configs are special order unless the base spec which they are likely to have but I have not looked.

Ive tested the 15" air in person and while the bigger screen is nice, for my use case, it feels huge compared to my 13.6" M2 air and have no desire to go bigger. My current m2 is the perfect size and have been extremely happy with it for my uses

I have newer macbooks but the oldest one I still use is a 13" 2012 MBA CTO with 8GB RAM (base config had 4), running OCLP Monterey. I tried Sonoma but encountered too many issues at present moment.

For word-processing, surfing the web and watching youtube it works totally fine. It's not like I'm waiting for the machine to process or anything. It's usually not a laggy experience when limiting the use case to such scenarios.

The downside is the screen, really. TN is yuck and it's hard to make out level differences in shadows. Some details just disappear if you happen to tilt the screen just a smudge. The resolution of the panel is less of a problem and I'm happy that it was a "generous" 1440x900 rather than the 2012 13" MBP's 1280x800.

I remember when I got it that it was a big deal for me. My first Macbook that I bought brand new and I could only afford one upgrade which was the RAM, something I deemed important. I was really stretching my budget.

I remember I used to make different 720p After Effects projects on it and edit stuff on FCP 7 :D It was really powerful for an "Air" at its time thanks to Ivy Bridge's ULV-CPUs getting a decent clock speed increase as well as HD4000 being a successful overhaul of the previous underwhelming HD3000.

It's in a really nice condition all years later but I've upgraded and gone through many MBPs ever since. This one is the "drag around anywhere in the home"-laptop nowadays. But it works well for that!

The current M1/M2 Macbook Airs are kinda in a similar seat. They are seriously powerful for their size and weight. Probably better bang for the buck, even. It's a bummer that they natively can't support two screens even with the M3. I know there are technical and rather good explanations on why that's the case, but it's still odd when my 2012 does support it. Anyway, I think many also don't see that as a problem.

I love my M2 MBA - perfect 13.6" screen, weight and size fits into my backpack.
I already have a 16" MBP that I don't use much due to the weight, size and battery life & high fan heat.

I originally pre-ordered a 14" M1 MBP. I didn't like it. Speakers on the unit I had were not very good in terms of top volume. Got a 16" MBP M1 Pro base. Returned it and got a 16" M1 Max MBP and stayed with that config for a while.

It was a beautiful machine in every way and I adored it BUT I had two issues. The weight was just ridiculous if you tried to actually use it like a laptop and the slick surfaces mean that it slides easily on surfaces which isn't good. After an hour on my lap it would be uncomfortable. I think it has to do with the distribution of weight on the MBP. I mean it is a solid laptop and perfect for a performance driven laptop. It was everything I wanted in a Pro MacBook I just didn't expect the ergonomics to be so bad for me. I also hated the blooming on the mini led. For 75%-80% of the time it is fine and beautiful but there are these odd situations where you get like a fog effect and it can be isolated to a small image or affect the entire screen. I really didn't like the effect when I saw it.

So I decided to go to the Apple Store and take a look at a M2 MacBook Air. I immediately fell in love with it but I had a lot of concerns if I was going to switch over from my MBP. Would I be happy with the performance of an 'Air"? Would I be happy with the much smaller screen? Would I be okay with the speaker downgrade and the loss of ports......And all of the people on MacRumors who constantly said how much better VALUE the MacBook Pro was over the M2 MacBook Air and I would be an idiot to even consider anything else. Despite all of that after testing the MBA in the store I was pretty confident I would be happy with it. At the time Apple was offering gift cards on purchases and I got an Edu discount. I decided to sell my 16" on Swappa and buy a BTO m2 MBA.

Man I was not expecting to love a laptop as much as I do the M2 MBA. It is lacking in a few key areas compared to the Pro's no doubt but that doesn't mean that what you get is bad or inferior it is just a different tech. The IPS 60hz display is actually really nice and surprisingly smooth with little tearing even when moving or scrolling. Of course a Pro motion or 120hz with the same display would be much better but what we have is not bad at all. If fact, I would rather deal with less contrast ratio than blooming but I am in the minority. The speakers are louder to my ears than the 14" MBP and although the specs do not show this to be true I think it has to do with the frequency response of the speakers and my age. If you are under 40 years old then you may not experience the same issue. But basically the Pro's are tuned with a lot of bass and low on the high end response so voices and other low sounds sound muted while on the air it is more tuned for miss and high end so you hear sounds more clearly even though the 14" has a higher max volume. The lack of ports is kind of a non issue since I have dongles from my previous 13" M1 MBP.

BUT what has really changed how I use a laptop is the FANLESS design. I should add a fan less design with some serious horsepower. When you thought of a MacBook Air from the Intel days it was a machine that could do basic tasks. It could not do anything at all intensive and graphics wise it was a joke. Doing video editing on an Air? Forget it. Having battery life over 6 hours SOT- forget it. So the air was a very restricted device but it was ultra light and portable for the time.

Now with m2 and m3 we have the power of a gaming cpu and decent integrated graphics without even needing a fan! Obviously for heavy sustained loads the air is simply not designed for but for burst loads it is perfect. For the kind of work I do I need speed in bursts. I don't do heavy sustained loads for more than 30 minutes or so. I bought the Pro to get performance I didn't really need or use. The M1 Max was a great CPU but not the most efficient even for m series. The heavy ram bandwidth was a battery hog. But if you needed to push that cpu for 2 hours the 16" would barely spin a fan. So the Pros are finally seriously made for actual 'Pro"s who use their devices to do tasks related to providing a finished product to a client and push their devices to the limit. I use my laptop for work but I don't do anything that isn't cpu bound and it doesn't ever push the cpu to its limits. When I had the 16" I realized I had paid for all this power I wasn't using.

When I got the Air the first thing that surprised me was the size of the screen. I didn't feel like it was too small. The performance was amazing. The speakers and display look and sound great. Battery life is insane. Being able to use the laptop anywhere without worrying about blocking vents or overheating the laptop. The weight is comfortable for hours at a time on my lap. The flexibility of the air is what makes it so special. You can push it and with a laptop cooler or frozen block with a towel and it acts almost as if it were actively cooled. But in day to day use there has never been a situation where my laptop has slowed down yet. As long as my performance is fast then I am happy. So I have a lot more flexibility and freedom on how and where I use my laptop. It isn't a burden to carry or use. It is fun.

Which is why the more I got to thinking about the 15" I decided that I am happy with the current size of my air. I am happy so far with the performance. I would love an M3 Air 13.6" and if the money Gods align and gift me with an M3 MBA I would be elated but I doubt I can afford to upgrade unless it would cost under $300. I doubt I could sell mine and buy a new one on the same config and get away only spending few hundred. So I think it would be better as others have said as to wait for some more significant changes either in design, components(OLED), or much better cpu and then upgrade.

Great explanation and discovery process you've had. Thanks for all the details. I've gone back and forth with the 14 MBP (both m1 and now m3) and M2 MBA. It's a coin toss. Both have positives and minor (very minor) negatives. I got no clue....

In your case I would ask yourself what you do with your laptop? If you are not considering the m3 pro 14" MBP then it does make your choice a little more difficult. The basic difference is the chassis and active fans. You get a better screen if you like mini led and pro motion. You get beefier speakers, you get more ports but it is heavier and bulkier. The 14" is manageable but compared to the air there is a difference. If you use your laptop actually on your lap a lot then the air is going to be a lot more comfortable.

I would go to the Apple Store and look at all the laptops you are considering. Consider the cost difference. Consider how long you will keep the laptop minimum. So if the same config M2 MBA costs around $1500 for decent config and the 14" MBP costs $1799 then you are talking around $300. I would have to actually test both machines at home for at least a week and see which is better for me. The air is the ultimate in freedom and the 14" offers a lot of versatility. It really depends on the type of user that you are. Don't listen about value and money in the sense what matters most is you are happy with what you get. The air would be considered less of a value even though it costs less because the value people put on certain features but in reality if those features don't matter to you then save the money.

I am sure that as we get closer to the release of the M3 MBA there will be heavier discounts on the M2 MBA and specially after the M3 MBA is released. It might be wise to see if you can get a mid range config for a good discount. This might make the value equation a lot better and I don't think the M3 is drastically better than M2.

re: "hidden configs", Best Buy, Amazon (through resellers), and some others stock 16/512 of the MBA15, but *only* in Midnight for some reason.

Thanks. I had the 15 M2 and really liked it. I had no plan on selling it and upgrading but when the M3 came out, I needed to try it. I have the M3 now (not the pro version but not the 8Gb base - I have 16GB/1TB). I'm trying it out. I definitely do not need the Pro. Most of what I do is writing, surfing, Keynote, and a little video editing. Clearly, the speakers and the display are better. I'm waiting on my real-life battery usage as that's the deciding factor for me.

So you have a decent configuration 14" m3 MBP? What do you think?

I imagine it is pretty sweet. If I were you I would probably just keep what you have.

You already had an m2 air so you know the difference first hand. What do you value most? I don't think that your configuration seems overboard for what you are doing and should age rather well.

If you return the 14" and get an m3 13.6" air you will save a few hundred, not have to worry about fans and it is a little lighter? BUT you will lose a few nice features of the Pro. Honesty I really think you have the best laptop. Sure in 6 months or more there will be sales on base configurations but you get to enjoy pretty much the fastest and best small laptop in the market with a lot of premium features.

If I could go back in time and have the funds to buy the m3 non pro 14" with 16gb ram/512gb ssd or my air I would go with the Pro. I love my air and lack of fans but I feel like I would never push the m3 to really need the fans. The non pro m3 is perfect for what I do and while the air is a lot more comfortable in my lap I think it would be a price I would be willing to pay. When I got my air the Pro's only had pro or max cpu which was way overkill for my needs.

But only you know what works best for you. There is no wrong answer just what you prefer and can afford.

The only difference between the M2 MBA and base M3 14” MBP (non pro) except the cpu (for now) are better screen, speakers and one cooling fan. I wouldn’t call these extras ‘premium features’…

Oh the pro users scream to the heavens about the screen and speakers on this forum alll the time lol. But i have no issues with my m2 air screen or speakers and absolutely love the portability of it

I have TRIED to talk myself into some reason I "need" to upgrade my M1 Air... but in good conscience I absolutely cannot. It's a really functional machine and still feels blazing fast.

The only thing I can think of that would move the needle would be Apple releasing an ultraportable like the 12" Retina MacBook. But barring that (or some exotic feature like a 3D display or something), I just can't see a good reason to move on.

I just set one of those up for an older relative. Also a gorgeous machine.

It's just hard to go wrong at this point with the current Macs. Even the cheapest ones are awesome.

I have a MBA 15' with M2 1TB/24G bought in July 2023. It's fantastic for casual use. Speakers are excellent. Battery lasts for days. Will keep it for several years.

The CPU is not as powerful as higher tier devices. It's struggling to play 8K Youtube videos (just for tests, not really beneficial). That could be the reason it's sipping power. On normal use (web surfing, etc.), the whole system power draw is around 3 watts only (including the LCD monitor in 50% brightness)!
