I just bit the bullet and bought the nano texture XDR. I was working on a very dark scene in After Effects and the reflections on the LG 5K pushed me over the edge 😂
Also bought a proper office chair. I think less eye fatigue and less ass fatigue will help me be productive in the long run.

I will try a side-by-side between the two... just to see if there are any differences in use that haven't been talked about.
Hmm, Dell just released its new up3221q, a professional 4K HDR1000 screen with 2000 local dimming zones, 100% DCI-P3 coverage and a built in colorimeter for almost half the price of the Apple XDR display. Seriously considering buying it, since it pretty much checks of all of my boxes.
Edit: ouch, 350nits peak brightness seems kind of low. And a contrast ratio of 1300:1 seems also extremely low to me for a MiniLED monitor...

Just double checked, the contrast ratio for HDR is actually 1000000:1 at 1000nits peak. That still leaves a rather weak 350 SDR peak brightness, but other than that the screen should be a dream. I wonder how that screen copes with OSX.
And it’s 3600€ here in Europe vs a whopping 6600€ for the XDR. Maybe the price will even go down a bit over the next months?

Just wondering why you consider 350nits for SDR weak? My current monitor can do 350 and I would describe it as very bright in a fully sunlit room with lights on. In a dim or dark room I would describe 350 nits as blindingly bright.
I actually gave it a thought and I think I'm gonna jump onto the Dell UP3221Q. The limited amount of reviews I've seen so far seem very promising, there seems to be no haloing and a very uniform brightness, as well as excellent color accuracy on top of the 99,7% DCI-P3 coverage. The built-in colorimeter which does auto calibration is also an excellent idea. Together with a voucher from a friend it'll end up costing me 3K, which is a decent price. Only thing I'm worried about is the input lag, since I intend to use this screen for HDR video game mastering, so I'll have to wait for those results.
Other than that, from what I've read it's extremely difficult to cram 2000 zones into a 32" screen. 10000 zones seems to be a thing of impossibility currently in this format from what I've gathered from specialised forums. So I'm very puzzled by the rumours, that Apple intends to cram 10000 zones into a 16" (!!) Mini-LED screen within the next 6 months, on a mobile device. Not only is the area 1/4 of what is considered to be already extremely challenging, also, even if it was possible, that screen needs to be actively cooled and there needs to be plenty of room for heat dissipation. There's only 1 rumoured 32" screen on displayninja with that amount of zones, which should've been already released, but suffers from massive overheating. Other than that the next best things is a 32" 4000 zones panel which will release at the end of next year.
So I can't quite believe those rumours, but if they are true, I definitely wouldn't want to buy a tech which seems to be outclassed by far within half a year. At the same time, such technology would basically also catapult the Pro Display XDR into the middle age, even with its 1600 peak brightness.
In any case, I'm gonna sleep over this possibility (given that Apple also surprised with it's ARM performance), but given the low chances of that happening I think I'm gonna buy that screen.

yeah but not presumably, Tim explicitly said it wasn't worth apples time when they stopped making monitors
I’m neither a photographer nor a graphic end user. I’m just a programmer and I spent some month in study a bit the situation of the external monitors that I can use with my mac. For sure I not study the point in the details, just surfing around the forums and websites and I believe that the really problem is how Apple menage the OS. To be more specific, is about how the pixel density is managed by the SO (because we have in front of us a HiDPI display = an high resolution display but that is scaled down). Now I tried a couple of monitor, but no one satisfy me. At the end I bought a DELL 2719D, that Is not perfect sharp, but I can accept it. From my budget, I can’t afford to spend more. I’m very disappointed that I can have the same flexibility that Windows or Linux can give me.
I work in a 'normal' home-office room (windows, ceiling lights, desk lamps, etc) and I have a 350 nit monitor and 500 nit monitor. One of the very few things I notice every single day is the 350 monitor cannot get bright enough. I've always noticed it but didn't know it was due to limited brightness until I got the 500 nit display and now I can never go back. Every monitor I buy in the future will be 500nits or more. and i'm just a dude doing business stuff, no video or photo work.
Sorry that's absolutely mental. Your monitor or your eyes are broken(hopefully not both!). Basically all design work not involving HDR is done at 80-160 nits btw, to say you need 500+nits constantly for general business tasks is a little concerning. Or maybe you have half a dozen 3000nit ceiling lights over your desk I don't know, but something's wrong.
Great question. I did a little quick searching and can't seem to find the interview that I remembered. Which means it's only as good as an anonymous internet user's memory - ha. But I swear I promise I remember reading it! If my memory serves, Tim did an interview and said that like routers there were too many other offerors providing customers with too many options for Apple to stay involved in the consumer monitor space. Basically he was saying that consumer monitors were commoditized and he didn't see any value there. Of course, since then Apple has dropped their 6k monitor so who knows...but I see that as a play in the pro market not 'normal' consumer market. Basically Apple is looking to grab buyers who want/need near-reference monitors but dont want to pay $30k+ for it.
