The idiots may be the ones who think GPS is coming to the current iPhone.

It won't. The combo of GPS + 3G uses too much power to meet the battery life spec, so people would complain and sue Apple. The GPS antenna is covered up by the cell phone and wifi antennas, so people will occasionally get bad directions and complain. And nobody wants to pay a bunch extra for legal rights to the map data, plus extra liability insurance (for when they crash and sue Apple just because they can).

.

um are you kidding me? first of all the whole google maps/liability clause was just a myth that was uncovered AGES ago. stop touting the same nonsense garbage about why the iphone CAN'T have turn by turn gps.

I still think those people touting for turn-by-turn GPS need to get off their a$$es and read a bloody map. You're crying about something that may or may not be implemented, but can't utilize the best GPS you have (your brain and your memory), study a map, and get the directions yourself. Instead, you rely on more machinery to run your lives instead of you running your life.

In short, keep an atlas on you and/or a Thomas Cook guide, let alone google maps to provide your directions. If you have to trust a turn-by-turn GPS instead of your own eyes on the road, you really don't deserve to be driving.

Go ahead, flame away. I've got the karma to burn.

You guessed correctly, you deserve the flame. This is a really stupid comment.

what a dumb post. what century do you live in that you don't regularly rely on machinery every single day?

I live in a century where it is better to use my own brain than to let some piece of machinery do my thinking for me.

You read me wrong. I didn't say I didn't rely on machinery, but that I don't let it run my life. If you have to allow a machine to tell you where you need to go to drive, there's a problem. You've given up your ability to think in terms where you need to go and how you need to get there. What happens when your turn-by-turn puts you in the wrong place? You're screwed because you let something else do your thinking for you, giving up your own free mind.

It's easier and better to know where you need to go before you head out to get there instead of getting something to tell you where you need to go. If you want someone to play backseat driver, get a wife or husband. ;)

Admittedly the iPhone uses more power than the charger can provide it with when GPS is on

yea im going to go ahead and call BS on this one. Driving from norfolk to washington DC the other day my iphone was at 10% when we got in the car. hooked it up to a usb charger, and 4 hours of GPS navigation later, my battery had charged to just under 50%.... so not only was it not losing power while the GPS was on (and 3G).... it was charging

Ah brilliant. I'm glad you found this out. This used to be a well documented problem with the GPS. It was discussed several times on Macrumors. They must've made some changes in some of the firmware updates since. Good find.

Come on, don't be mean on Christmas. It might also depend on the type of charger you use. I know there have been well-documented cases where charger haven't been able to keep up with the battery-draining location service.

There's several other reason's that can cause this.

1) Standard USB chargers (and the specifications in general) provide 500A, where as the supplied apple wall charger outputs 1000A

2) The iPhone has been noted to stop charging the battery if the unit itself gets too hot. This is what caused most people to think that the phone was never charging because GPS used to much power, where it was instead just a safety feature that kicked in after a bit of usage (The phones were charging, but only slightly and then stopping after they became too hot)

How hot did it get? Was your cars AC turned on?

Surely, you jest. I'm surprised you bother to use a computer. Surely you could have hand written out a letter and mail your comments.

No one is suggesting letting a machine take the place of your brain. It's called convenience and living in the 21st century. Perhaps getting around in a new town/country, or simply getting you in the right vicinity.

I hope you're intending to turn off traction control and ABS in your car? That's a machine doing work that you could! How can you trust it to stop your car and keep you on the road? You should be pumping the break and controlling the wheels on your own!

It's a pretty lame argument, just like the one that says the internet makes you dumb.

Lastly if I had the choice between my wife and a machine giving me travel directions, I know which one I'd choose :p

Seeing that I was driving before ABS was standard in all models and I learned to drive in a non-power steering equipped car, neither would make a difference.

Plus, try it in snow. Either way, it pays to know how to get where you're going before you go.

I agree with that last bit, it does pay to know where you're going before you leave, but I just don't agree with where you take it after that. GPS is an awesome invention that beats the pants of street directories. That's not saying a map is useless, but that in most cases a GPS is better.

I too drove before the days of ABS, but you'd have to be silly to say that you can stop as fast without ABS as you can with, because some things machines are just better at ;)

Dumbest argument made to date, ever! Congrats!

Those "unnecessary" inventions make our lives easier. If I have the option to make my life easier, why shouldn't I? You may have a very boring and uneventful life, but some of us actually lead hectic lives. I certainly have more important things to think about...You keep reading maps, use your brain. I need my GPS...and I need them in my phone, so that I won't have to carry more than one gadget.

efficiency, productivity....getting the shi#t done on time...
That's what's important....

Now go make fart noises on your phone...That's all it's good for.

seriously. there is a huge difference between trivial novelty and contributive technology. if we were talking about escalators or something then yah i'd agree with you. completely unnecessary invention. but your arguments against gps are just ridiculous and nonsensical.

you seem to be only interested in trying to prove you have some form of superior brain due to the fact that you like to look at paper maps. if thats what makes your outdated thought process feel relevant in these modern times then oh well good for you.

So you say.

Once again, you read WAY between the lines. I NEVER said that they didn't make our lives easier. I've been a Unix sysadmin for 15 bloody years, and if anyone should know about the ease and use of computers and machinery over the past decade and a half, it's me. I also never said that anyone could NOT use it. What I am saying is that people are beginning to rely too much on some things to run their lives and get them where they need to go instead of using some other tried and true method of getting the same information; plus you may LEARN something about what is around where you are going.

Case in point: Would you let a GPS tell you how to get to California from Oklahoma City ("Calculating route: in 1 mile, turn right onto Interstate 40 yadda yadda") , or would you look at a map see that you have Route 66 taking you to the same place, and enjoy your trip, seeing all what is around you?

efficiency, productivity....getting the shi#t done on time...
That's what's important....

I digress with the above.

I'm not going to get into what is important to you. That is your prerogative, and frankly, I don't bloody care. But I will say this. You may think that efficiency and productivity is important, But what is important NOW? Time with family, not missing a single moment with your children and/or wife (should you have them).. things like those are what is important to me, and NOW.

If productivity is the spice of your life, more power to you. But I'll guarantee you that your life will be less fulfilling than mine. Enjoy your efficiency and productivity.

Now go make fart noises on your phone...That's all it's good for.

spoken like a clueless idiot.

Anyway, I've made my point. Want to keep whinging over it, go ahead. I'm out.

iPhone GPS

Is this a forum to discuss future possibility of turn by turn for the iPhone? or a presidential debate between Republicans and Democrats? LOL. The only reason I like to use the Mac Forums is to try to get the latest info on upcoming technology, not to try and put it down. For those who could care less like (BL), use another venue (like the "Technology Haters Support Group). I find users comments hilarious at times. If anything, I get a good laugh at peoples perspectives, but hey! let's stick to the promise of technology and how great it is to live in an era to enjoy its benefits. :)

BTW, the comment about only thing the iphone is good for is the fart maker comment is freakin halrious!!! You should be a comedian!!! Cheers to you...:)

Well, I navigate for a living. I can read maps, take star shots and do basic trig in my head. But when I go on vacation, I'd rather take in the sights (and be more aware of traffic) while the TomTom takes care of the navigating! I sure wish Mr. Jobs would get this functionality going on the iPhone. I believe the good folks at TomTom are ready to deliver.
