I'm seeing all these thermal issues, stuttering, whatever... I need a new computer, is there issues with the 16" MBP, should I wait for an update? I don't think there will be another before ARM and I need Intel I think for Bootcamp.

If you are not working with external monitor while the lid is open then you will face no issue.

That is my current setup, I have an external 4k monitor and use my laptop open as the second screen. Sooooo new iMac instead? lol

This exactly.. I have the base model i7 5300m and haven’t experienced any issues at all other than using external monitor, which I rarely need as I use my 12.9 iPad via sidecar for extra realestate when needed.

Bought mine in May and hands down this is the best MacBook I’ve ever owned.

Can’t comment on iMac as it is too new and does not have enough report but the dGPU model is based on the same navi 14. Potentially it could face the same high power draw for non hbm2GPU.

Does the 5600M with HBM2 have the same thermal issue or does the GPU not matter? If I get the MBP 16 it will be the 5600M HBM2

The 5600 is an eye-wateringly expensive upgrade though. I've decided that if I want a better graphics card over the 5500, or have thermal issues with an external screen, I'll just get a better eGPU for about the same price.

I have the base 16” and have no Thermal issues so far. Idles about 110F with no monitor. I can connect three older Dell monitors running 1680 x 1050 and it then idles about 135F. It’s no worse than my 2015 with just two connected.

Howdy :),

It seems, that the problem with the 2019 16" MacBook Pro, is that the system uses too much power when driving an external display and the internal display. There is much discussion about this here https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/16-is-hot-noisy-with-an-external-monitor.2211747/

Many folks have indicated that after contacting Apple, they were told that this behavior is expected. I do not use an external monitor with my 16" MBP, and have not experienced these issues, but have no doubt I would see the power spike if I plugged in an external display. The newer upgraded Radeon Pro 5600M does not seem to exhibit this issue, and there is much speculation (again in the above thread) as to why. Some folks think it is a simple driver fix, which is why the 5600M which presumably uses a different driver, is fine. Folks also indicate that none of the GPU options show this behavior in Windows under BootCamp.

Good luck!

Get the 5600m model. Dont install istat menu and it will not be a problem. Just use the laptop. It's a great laptop.

Considering your comments...and lack of mentioning (did I miss it?) a need for portability...I would buy the new iMac over the 16" MBP in a heartbeat. I'm debating whether to dump my 16" now for the new iMac or wait for ARM since I don't need Windows accessibility. I despise my 16"..YMMV

I pulled the trigger last week on a Lenovo X1 Extreme for about $1,800 after using the THINK50 discount, couldn’t be happier.

I also rely on plugging into projectors and monitors frequently, and having to hassle with dongles, along with other nagging issues these newer Macs seem to have were too much of a dealbreaker. I already needed to run Windows in a VM, so there were just too many reasons to move away from the platform.

I'm running the 16" i9/16GB/1TB model picked up on sale at Best Buy, open box, with a 10% off coupon @ $1999. Could not be happier with the machine. I use it in laptop mode as well as clamshell attached to a 32" 4K monitor. No crashes, overheating, kernel panics, or any of the other problems I have read about. I got my Daughter the same machine, only Apple refurbished and she also has no issues. Neither one of us uses it with the lid open and monitor attached, maybe that's where all the problems lie.

How is the fan noise when you use it like this?

Depends what I'm doing. It's quiet most of the time, ramps up like you would expect under load. It does make fan noise, but I'd kind of expect that with an i9 and discreet graphics. Nothing compared to my kids gaming rig though!
