what in their right mind does it people think 16:9/10 is what we need for a laptop? it's not like we watch movies on it for that. we got 100"+ TVs these days. no we read and write more text or see more of these tiktok videos nowdays on our laptops... just do the the right thing already. 3:2. even a 1:1 lol would be perfect. imagine all the extra battery juice you can add.

Yeah! Towards a square!! Down with the rectangle dictate!!! 💪🤪😂🤣😃

But seriously, here:

Lots and lots of laptop users watch movies on their laptops, especially young people and people who live in smaller homes.

I don't watch tv/movies/streaming on my MacBook either, nor my iPhone, but a lot of people do, especially students. Both of my kids do the majority of their content consumption on a laptop.

My previous work laptop was 3:2. My MacBook isn't, and it's fine. Who cares?

Additionally, I've never personally seen a 100" screen. Ours is a 65" and plenty large for our large den.

I agree! I'm in the 12" PowerBook / 12" MacBook club and loved the taller aspect ratio. I purchased a Surface Laptop Go 2 and love the screen, even if it isn't "retina" resolution.

As an aside, I really tried to Hackintosh this laptop but there was not support for the Iris Xe graphics so it was a non-starter. As a Windows laptop it really is one of the best computers I've ever had.

I will be more radical than you – I want 4:3 screens back.

Honestly, 16:9, 16:10, 21:9 etc are all stupid formats invented and pushed by stupid movie industry. Ahh seriously it all feels like some sort of conspiracy!! It is not wider, it is CROPPED lol. Maybe it makes sense on Vision Pro and similar headsets, but iPhones are too elongated imo.

I mean I love 4:3 photos AND videos. If someone ever seen a video from GoPro in 4:3 or even in new 8:7 you definitely know what I am talking about. And iPhones can also shoot 4:3 videos but unfortunately it needs 3rd party apps, native app shoots it in limited form when you hold shutter button in photo mode

Oh, I got that. But as pointed out, if you go beyond »watching« things - as pointed out by @smirking - you want that extra space for toolboxes, inspector, etc. You are not handicapped when watching something on 16:9, but you are on 3:2… sometimes. 🤓
I edit video and I much prefer it on 3:2.
I use both a 3:2 Surface Laptop Studio and a 16:9 portable Cintiq and the 16:9 comparatively feels very crammed vertically for tool and timeline windows.

I miss taller aspect ratios for video too. Just feels more natural to me. Movies and TV started with 4:3, then awhile back movies changed to shorter wider aspect ratios purely to differentiate itself from TV. Then TV and computers eventually followed suit. Then movies got even wider to differentiate more. So it’s really for artificial reasons and out of hand at this point. IMAX brought it back to 1.43:1 and I hope that influences more screens to go back to being taller.

You do now that they basically have 3:2 displays?
At least the Pro models, as they feature a 16:10 display + the notch part on top of that.

For instance the 16" models have a resolution of 3456x2234 if you divide either number by 1152 you get roughly 3:1.939. I'd say that's close enough.
For the 16" model you are only 70 pixels short of full 3:2. This translates to exactly 7mm of screen real estate you are missing out on.

Fun Fact: Even though the scenes are measured diagonally in inches, apple basically uses metric displays with 10 Pixels per millimeter.

BTW: 16:10 ≈ 3:1.875, 16:9 ≈ 3:1.6875 and IMAX' 1.43:1 ≈ 3:2.098

Switching from a 2012 11" MacBook Air to a 2023 14" MacBook Pro, and the 16:10 (available) of the Pro feels pretty good for some things after more than a decade using 16:9. And every now and then I do kind of miss 16:9. Not often, but not never.

I had a lot of fun playing Descent back in the 90s!
